Flash probably. Block/disable Flash and see if it is more stable.

Use something that isn't Safari?

For the record I use autotrader fine using Safari.....Tesco Direct however does sometimes lock things up.

just download firefox as a backup browser
having said that I have yet to find a website which kills safari - so I have yet to download firefox

Whoever designed the revised Autotrader website wants shooting...a classic example of breaking something that didn't need fixing.
