can anybody explain to me in what way are they automated over a normal total station?

Is it 'cos you can use the remote control so you don't need to shout "up a bit, left a bit" to another person? Just guessing...

thats what i think too but im not sure my lecturer will accept that. think he may want a bit more detail.

I automatically assumed what BigJohn said to be honest. In France there's loads of autaomtic total stations (no staff)

you have made me laugh though so all is not lost. found a really boring youtube vid that answered my question. so the prize (there is no prize) goes to konabunny for being closest to the actual answer. i might mention service stations operated by total fuels though. share the mirth and all that.
