...The time has come for my official MLC car, later this week I will be purchasing my friends S4 Cab, hes owned from new with 32000 miles on it (2008 model so its the 4.2 beast) cost for the next 10 months on my insurance in £86.00 swapping from a Honda civic
We have a new Avensis estate with a tow bar which carries 4 bikes for family duties (just back from long weekend in France with all the bikes)
Future trips would be far more enjoyable in the S4 !
To Towbar or not to towbar ? That is the question.
Would you ? I'm thinking trailer as well which gives room for tent and bikes...
Thoughts on this problem !
I'm not to concerned about MPG as its wont be doing more than a few thousand a year, as mileage is shared between wife Avensis and my Vw camper
Doesn't that mean you have to carry 4 people in it too then? I know it's a 4 seater cab, but, you know, 2's better right?
Presumably takes a tow bar OK? Maybe it's only the RS4 that doesn't
Without a towbar how do you plan on carrying bikes? Can't imagine there is room in the boot for one let alone four? Why would you be carrying bikes in this car when you could use the VW or Avensis instead?

much more fun !!!!
there are a few compatible tow bars for the S4
Why not let the wife drive the Avensis with all of the bikes in it and you just drive the S4 free of any additional lumps of metal on it ?
Don't forget to take the rollers out of your hair first 🙂
You think you've got problems? My MLC car doesn't even take a bike rack.
If available get a detachable tow bar and check whether the fit can be done without cutting the bumper. It will leave the car lookkng much better when it isnt on bike carrying duties.
When you are done with it, please sell it to me. In the mean time enjoy
First world problems, Shirley.
I meant 1st world problem...

i think you're thinking of an MX5 !!!
Lotus looked at me funny when I asked about a roof rack for the Evora as it was obvious there was not going to be a tow bar option (exhausts in the way).
If you get a tow bar just get a fully hidden one by Westfalia etc.
Ps is this not a 1st world problem or did Audi S4 cabrios suddenly become the car of choice for the developing nations?

Is the car type approved for a tow bar?
It is not uncommon for an A4 to be type approved but an RS4 is not even though its the same chassis and the towbar fits.
The 2008 S4 cab is not homologated for towing - you will have difficulty finding a reptutable towbar fitter to fit one.
Yes, you are not using it to tow. No it won't blow the cooling system of the 4.2 up, yes your insurance company will want to know, no they won't have the right box to tick on their computer, yes you will need to cut the bumper.
It is a right pain fitting a bar to a non homologated car.
Saris Bones rack?
Worked fine on my MX5
