Oh now hang on there! You actually own the phone and yet are saying it is not a major issue!??!? How can that be right? When it flies in the face of all those shouting about the problem existing on the phone they do not actually own!

You should be ashamed.

ha! it certainly feels that way!
If they give me a free bumper i'll be chuffed (cus i want one!) but honestly, I can't say it needs one.
See what happens at 6 - a load of talking I expect.

but if this is an issue, it's a very small one compared to how good the product is in every other way.

yeah but you just like shiny things innit ?

I understand that apple have sold and continue to sell a faulty product, what I don't understand is how gullible people can be to have one even though they know its faulty

In the same way my HTC's much vaunted amoled screen is useless in bright sunlight, and cracked and bled after 3 weeks use despite never have being dropped. The service department that replaced it also suggested it wasn't a good idea to carry it in my pocket without a case, and that that was probably the cause of the breakage. To me that's a fault.

I can recommend you don't park a car on an iphone 4, the glass screen tends to shatter, I could post up a photo of said result if anyone's bothered?

Blue actually. Rather similar to my own.

.

I thought that was fairly standard for all large screen phones, as the screen is prone to cracking if squashed/strained etc. in your pocket.....e.g. bent round your butt if you sit down with the phone in your back pocket or between thigh & hip in your front pocket...

It's like saying a banana has a fault because the skin splits and squidges out if I stick it in the pocket of my jeans and then sit down.

MrNutt: good effort.

The other week one of my mates managed to reverse over his laptop bag, after taking out the boot to get something and forgetting to put it back in.

It didn't do his laptop too much good. 😀

Hmmm no cracks here. I don't use a case and sit on mine several times a week, as I carry it in my back pocket and frequently forget about it when getting into the car.

I'm over 15 stone as well, though I suppose the extra padding might actually help 🙂

just saying that all devices seem to go to market with their faults. Until these phones came along mobiles were pocket friendly. The iphones we've had previously were fine in pockets. No warning in the product literature about this. To me this is a bigger flaw than the iphone's- it would have been cheap and easy to provide a suitable casing, but doubtless that would make the device larger and heavier.

Of course, a national company most of you have in your home and bleat on about with 17,000 staff is a "fool."
Several public sector organisations that have been using us for over four years are "fools."

Come on guys, why let facts get in the way when you can have a few cheap shots using the rage gun?

Sorry if life upsets you and sorry you have to take it out on someone who isn't upset but life is cruel like that.

Every little green eyed pop reveals so much about every one of you stalker geeks - Jamie, Simonofbarnes, Drac, jahwomble and many others. All have the same issues, all are a bit sad.

There, plenty for you to all froth about for a while. 😆

Oi! Don't lump me with that lot, I have my own issues thanks all the same 🙂 And surely anyone supposing Apple isn't arrogant is delusional ?

Smurf-Mat,

You seem to not know what you're talking about.

"I can't believe how much they've hyped a small announcement..."

Apple invited tech journos yesterday - for todays announcement! No hype, they're clearly trying to limit the damage here - the (non?) issue has gone mainstream - Oprah, Top Gear etc - time to explain things.

To be honest, if they announce a recall I won't even bother sending mine back. The problem just isn't that big a deal for me. It does drop bars when you hold it but it still works. Plus using it to make calls is just a small part of what I do with it.

Do either of those facts preclude foolishness? Fairly sure they don't.

Jobs is trying really hard isnt he?

All that returns data and capplecare call stuff is rubbish. I would imagine most fanbois wouldnt consider taking the phone back even if it caught fire and melted into a puddle of goo! And others are probably just holding out to see if there's a patch for the antenna issue.

"iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS"

if the 3gs drops 1 per 100 calls and the 4 drops 1.99 per 100 (ie less than an additional 1) then the 4 is essentially twice as bad!

so jobs hasnt actually explained why holding the phone funny causes the signal falls? it's just "a challenge for the entire smartphone industry to improve its antenna technology". enlightening.

Not very convincing presentation with a lot of fluff but then I doubt there is anything they could say to stop the haters hating.

Glad i didn't buy a case, i'll probably not use the free one anyway.

Jamie:
While I do not have a iPhone 4 I know several people who do, and they all seem to find the phone works fine. I am assuming that yes there is an issue with the phone, but it its being blown up, as usual, by a vocal minority. Remember, its the internet and people love to complain.

So with this in mind I am going for:

Software Patch, free bumper and the continuation of being able to return the phone if you're still not happy.

Apple is offering a free case to every owner of its iPhone4.

Apple boss Steve Jobs unveiled the offer at a press conference called to tackle the ongoing speculation about the iPhone4's antenna problem.

Mr Jobs also extended an offer to iPhone4 users to give them a full refund if they were still unhappy with the handset's performance. This offer will be available until 30 September.

Nailed it.

Damn I am awesome! Not as awesome as Mat obviously, as even to write my name in the sentence as his makes me feel all warm and tingly.

Based on retail prices of iPhone cases

I would imagine a bumper would cost circa $0.10 or similar.

John Snow on C4 news had the best solution: a bent wire coat hanger.

It seems most of those having issues are in the States, so there could be several reasons for this: Yanks sense of entitlement that dictates that the tiniest perceived problem requires compensation and counselling for personal injury, combined with a network (AT&T) that is overcapacity and drops calls left, right and centre, overemphasising what is a barely perceptable problem in other countries with more robust networks and multiple networks carrying the iPhone.
Mine is quite happily streaming 6Music with no bars showing on a 3G signal, which I'm more than happy with.

I doubt there is anything they could say to stop the haters hating.

but doesn't this elevate the whole thing to a quasi religious status? People are no longer critics but "haters", as if finding fault implied mere prejudice rather than anything founded on fact!

I am more amazed at how bitter the "lovers" and "haters" are! It's like the new religion? Makes me laugh to be honest... as sad as all the religious head cases!!

It's like the new religion?

Apart from the fact that your statement is not a question, you are totally accurate. Apple are, in effect, some sort of cult. There are people who "believe" in Apple for no apparent reason. So, in many ways it is like religion. Only the odd thing is, those who are "Apple believers" are invariably the same sort of person who take great pleasure in denouncing those with a religious belief, and they also take terrible offence when you criticise their "belief".
