When out and about, shopping etc.
Seems it may become compulsory on public transport and in shops.
I only have my Hannibal Lector cycle one and the PPE ones on eBay are the same price as a house.

Not yet, based on evidence more than anything, but have ordered some for the family ready for the inevitable requirements as per most European countries.

I wear a Buff round my neck when I'm out on the bike.

I pull it over my mouth when I have to pass people on a narrow bit of trail.

If I went to the supermarket I'd do the same

Buff in supermarket. For the minimal risk involved, it's not worth going full PPE standard.

Do you manage that without touching your face? Sounds like you are swapping a tiny risk for a bigger one.

Yep. Polka dot one made from a pair of Mrs. S's PJs.

She made us one each.

I never thought I’d see WCA in the buff

If masks become compulsory the purpose is to prevent asymptotic people unwittingly  infecting others - its not to protect the wearer. - So a face covering is all thats called for - a buff would be fine.

You may need to touch your face to do that but you can also, you know.. wash your hands first.

Buff plus made some. Completely normal here in Belgium now. Wear them in shops and in public if there are a lot of other people around. Don't wear them when riding though

I'll be using a buff.

I've seen some chancers on the internet charging £12 for a printed bit of cloth in a mask shape, don't think I'll bother thanks.

Do you think theres a market for buffs printed with a photo of your own face?

Apparently, this will work to unlock your phone (also seen on the internet) .

If we have to wear masks in supermarkets, how will they know if we are shoppers or cowboys about to rob them?

If you turn up on a horse, they will know.

Normal now in Spain, I ended up putting one on for my last visit to the supermarket. I certainly don't wear one on my bike or running, though.

Not used one in anger yet, but I've prepared a buff and a "proper" mask that looks like one of those old Dr Whites sanitary products.

I can't work out how to wear them without making my glasses steam up though. Is there a knack?

I'll probably be more dangerous blundering about with one than seeing where I'm going without.

By the colour of your Stetson.

If it's a black one, they better hand over the loot.

Fold it over a pipe cleaner / straightened out paper clip / other random bit of flexible wire which'll allow you to force it into a tight fit around the bridge of your nose.

My wife had the sewing machine out a couple of weeks back and knocked up a supply of masks for us all with paperclips sewn into the nose bit. Works a treat.

Mine are Black Watch tartan.

If masks become compulsory the purpose is to prevent asymptotic people unwittingly infecting others – its not to protect the wearer. – So a face covering is all thats called for – a buff would be fine.

The point was that the poster was pulling it up whenever he passed someone and, I presume, down again afterwards. So potentially touching his face each time. One of the things to be avoided. And only during a fleeting pass outside with a tiny risk of transmission.

You may need to touch your face to do that but you can also, you know.. wash your hands first.

I'm not sure how you wash your hands every time you touch it, especially while riding a bike.

A mate of mine is a bit of an ace tailor in his spare time. He's made us all masks.

Locally, mask usage seems to be dropping and even those who are wearing them often have their nose uncovered... 🙄

My wife wears one on the very few occasions she goes to the shops but I’ve only done it once and spent the entire time trying exhale downwards so my glasses didn’t steam up.

Let's consider that in detail... If you're CV+ and asymptomatic, the mask will reduce the cough-radius, but get more infection on your hands each time you adjust it. So if you're, say, shopping in a supermarket you'll leave a trail of infected surfaces. If you're CV-, then the mask won't filter out air-borne virus, but you're picking up shopping from the shelves which has been contaminated by earlier CV+ customers, and then adjusting your mask with those same hands. You won't be washing your hands after every piece of shopping you pick up, surely?

A mask could help, as you say, but only if it's well-fitted and the wearer doesn't need to adjust it frequently. In the real world, how likely is that?

Having said that, I foresee that it will become compulsory at some point, so it's as well to be aware of these things so they can be allowed for.

Went to the chemists to get my parent's prescriptions for them yesterday with my two layers of buff pulled up over my face and my gloves only to realise I'd forgotten the sawn off

Where I live (Nobland) it would appear C19 has been eradicated since STAY AT HOME was replaced with STAY ALERT. Went to ASDA the other day and there was no social distancing, full families shopping with kids picking up product and putting it back. A group of four lads on bikes came in to get meal deals. Sandwich picked up. Sandwich put back. Another sandwich picked up... and put back. Same with drinks. So I have and will continue to sanitise everything I bring into the house.

Just wait for the second MASSIVE spike.

Seen quite a few people driving around, alone, with the windows up, wearing a mask. Not sure who they think they are protecting.
Local shops have signs up encouraging mask wearing, but I'd say only about 20-30% are wearing them.
Supermarket is providing gloves for everyone.

Not if they don't touch anything.

You don't need to unless you touch something.... other than my controls I don't touch anything when I'm out on my bike. Regardless I carry a spray bottle of isopropyl and nitrile gloves anyway.

I bought some from China at the beginning of this mess. My Mrs has been making lots of them, again with pipe cleaners. Haven't worn one yet but will do so.

I wear one in Tesco when doing the "big shop". More as a comfort blanket type thing for me as I know that wearing one may not do me any real good, but it certainly won't do me any harm.

How long before the VE Day Conga/BBQ spike kills a few more nurses?

Yep, been using a buff for rides and in the supermarket yesterday.

Noticed many more masks in the supermarket, hardly any gloves.

That's the point isn't it? - the message is, you wear a mask to protect others. *Their* masks protect you.

Nope, haven't got one. I'd say the majority of shoppers I've seen in Lidls are wearing them, but no-one in the Tesco Express nearby.

Actually just remembered I've got a few dust masks from when we sanded a floor. Would that do the job?

Buff in shops,
But I am very much aware that the purpose of doing so is not really to protect me, if I want to do that I’d have to wear properly rated and fitted ppe
Rather
In case I am unknowingly infected it will help prevent me passing it on.

If more folks understood that I think wearing would increase a lot,

Gloves on the other hand are a total waste of time, they really are meant to be single use and dispose of them,
Much better to wash hands way more often than normal

I refuse point blank to set foot in Asda ever again due the total lack of social distancing advice / signage / enforcement in our branch.

Had to go into a care home for work the other day, including into a residents bedroom and the toilets, reception didn't even offer or suggest hand sanitisation but did insist on wearing of face masks...

Wife made a few for eldest daughter who is having to commute into London

I'm not wholly convinced that a Buff is dense enough to usefully reduce escape velocity of evil particles. Two layers of thickly woven cotton seems to be the acceptable standard for effectively protecting others - or a double layer of kitchen towel inside a fabric mask. Buffs, particularly I guess if you have a prominent chin which stretches the fabric, seem a bit sub par. I guess you could insert some kitchen towel / cotton under / between layers in the mouth/nose area if that bothers you.

I used a mask yesterday when I went into my GP to have some blood samples taken. They asked me to and the missus bought some way back in time when this thing was only just beginning to kick off.

A friend of mine is making them so I have got some - but not used them yet. Much nicer to wear than hospital PPE masks. I will wear one when appropriate ie in places where you cannot get your 2 m

Thing with a buff seems to me to be that when you take it off you smear whatever's on it all over your face.

The probability of someone infected, infectious and coughing/sneezing while you are in their vicinity is already extremely small.
