peacock?
Thing has decided to nest under a bush in my tiny garden. Nice pet you may think... however, it will die if my dog comes to stay and goes outside for a wee. The dog knows it's there so will not settle in the house. (Dog only stays with me once a week or so).
RSPCA advice is to "keep the dog away" Yeah cheers. and put a card up in the local shop as they are usually privately owned. Nice one. "It's my peacock" "I need to check - what does it look like?" yeah, that'll work.
Any better advice gratefully received!

I've been out to check. All 12 of mine are safely roaming the grounds. Thanks for the heads up though.

I hear the sound they make is quite haunting, ethereal and loud.

You'll find out tonight.

Know anyone who'd gut and pluck a peacock?

RSPCA also said you can deter it by making no food available... so do they eat overgrown grass and uncared for bushes then? Cos that's all that is in my bloody garden.

Oh I've heard the noise - last time the dog chased it. It's like a loud gooses honk with a strange echo at the end. Not the EEeeAOW! (sp) we used to hear at Leigh Park gardens in the 70s 😆

Do you really care if it is the rightful owner who comes to claim it?
They are very noisy so may have been abandoned.
If the dog is regularly around (on its lead) will the peacock not move on by itself?
Local facebook group seems to be full of dog and cat found wandering the streets posts. Assume you will have something similar in your area - at least a peacock would add interest!

Show it a yellow card.

I believe that's customary for a fowl.

Peacock was always scared of Mrs Slocombe's pussy.

Good call. RSPCA obviously not aware of the internet age!

Use the dog to scare it off you mean? Well, yeah, but it came back after she chased it last time. And the dog not settling is a big problem.
Just need rid of the stupid bird!

Protected species ??

Could be, be careful before you neck it..

The peafowl umbrella covers three species: green peafowl (Pavo muticus), Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) and Congo peafowl (Afropavo congensis). The males of these pheasants are well-known as peacocks; the females are called peahens. Green peafowl are the only endangered species.

The males of these pheasants

It's from the pheasant species?! No wonder the dog went nuts.

I think it takes fourteen people and they all need to be pleasant.

RSPB?

Looked at the website - they're more about conservation.
There is a forum, so may join up and post a similar question.
Gonna put a lost & found on Facebook too.

Obvz is obvz but they normally frequent large open grassland estates, have you a “Land Owner” nearby ?
Posting it on FB will no doubt lead to all sorts of nut jobs coming around and claiming it’s theirs.. no?

Look forward to repeated 'You called the RSPCA recently, would you like to donate' calls over the coming weeks

Nope.
Leigh Park Gardens mentioned earlier, is fairly close, but there's a motorway between there and my house. Maybe I should shove it in a sack, take it to the fields across the motorway and free it..!

We had some locally which had gone feral and were breeding. I quite liked them but several neighbours thought they were a nuisance so they were rounded up and sent somewhere "safe".

I still hear one now and then though but it doesn't visit.

I hate them. The noise terrified me as a kid.
Would love to eat one though.

There was a large brown spotted egg shell on the lawn yesterday too... nothing in it (except a small slug).
Just googled, and it was a peacock egg. 😯

Their excrement is foul smelling too - reminiscent of cat / fox

Ring the RSPCA and tell them it's a Cat.

They will come out...bitch at you because its a Peacock.

Insist you thought it was a Cat.....they will then take it away.

It's there job, they beg enough.

PS Had this problem with a ferret, should of said it was a Cat.

Take the dog out there on the lead, that'll scare the hell out of the peacock. Do it enough and he won't come back

My parents used to have a peacock come into there garden every now and then. If I went over with my lab the peacock would take off and land on the house roof or something. It wasn't the most graceful of flyers. Used to come in every day for a while, then just stopped. Random

I'd ring Britain's Got Talent, cos if a PeaCOCK has laid an egg then you're on to a winner 😉

I reckon it's from your Garden Ctr thingy and flew over the Motorway one night and has decided because you never visited it in said Gdn Ctr has decided upon itself to deficate on your Garden and terrorise your Dog and reproduce.. thereby annoying you, your neighbours and your neighbours neighbours..

Do you have a SO? Wife, Girlfriend or Grandma?? option no 3

I've just half remembered that its bad luck to have peacock feathers in the house. Not sure if that's for the house or the peacock though.

Pretty, but as wittily suggested by woody2000, it doesn't have those feathers. It wouldn't fit in my garden if it did.
Looks like this

no chicks just yet.
