[#5604701]

Im a qualified teacher and just been offered two jobs to teach, i've just been told that Sheffield Police Force have a 4-8 week backlog of CRB/DBS checks an that i'm looking at around 60 days for mine to be processed.

This has led to both job offers being withdrawn, understandably, and left me jobless as it rules out supply too.

Having just moved to Stockport i'm left jobless and wondered if anyone knew of anything or anywhere looking for staff.

Really trying to keep my head up but struggling after working so hard to get my teaching degree.

Oh well the bills need paying, i'm healthy and keen to work so anything is considered.

Hi, cheers mate, i have job offers for teaching but because the police force are 8 weeks behind with the disclosure checks i can't work in a school.

You need a certificate from the DBS.

If it's a 1 or 2 month wait for the checks to come through, can't you try to get some agency/contract work whilst keeping on the lookout for more teacher positions closer to the expected date of clearance?

Bar work, maybe, or some office stuff?

I have no idea if that kind of thing is available in Stockport, just an idea.

Yeah, i joined agencies for teaching and they are offering me loads of work but without the crb i can't do it yet.

As I've just moved to Stockport i have no idea where to look. I guess i'll look for temporary work and hope the CRB comes back sooner.

I'll send my C.V to the temping agencies. Anybody know which ones are good/reliable?

Suggested St Annes as that's where i'm at atm and my DBS check was done within the week, wasn't aware of any delay. Thought the OP had perhaps applied for teaching jobs over the border, DBS check may have gone to different place unless they have a centre...

I've moved from Sheffield mate, it's South Yorkshire Police where the delay is.

Plenty of Xmas temp jobs, city centre or Trafford Centre must be tooling up. Zero hour rubbish for the most part, 4 hour shifts.
I hope South Yorkshire can pull their finger out, worth emailing the elected commissioner? Give him something to do.

Do you not have a CRB from your previous employment?

If it were me I'd be contacting either my MP or the local press and claiming 'beurocracy gone mad' that's costing the country (and you) money.

so the people who've offered him a job will be unable to employ someone who doesn't already work for them to fill these posts?

Sounds like restraint of trade as well.

Maybe contact your union and get some legal advice?

Seems funny they've withdrawn the job offers, as said above a crb is employer specific so nobody could get the job for the same reason as you..
How do agency/supply teachers who get chucked in at short notice to cover sickness and stuff get round it?

CRB is done by the police force local to your residence as records are kept on a force by force basis. If mosey had moved a lot, he would potentially have had to wait on the checks from several forces

I moved from Sheffield to Stockport in August so my history is there and that's where the 4 week backlog is.

Crb is person specific so it depends how many your local force have to do and where they are on their list of priorities.

The supply agency does your crb and you can use it across all schools.

My old crb ran out in July when I finished my course and you can't apply for one yourself.

I assure you the checks, whilst completed by the above company, do go to the local police offices.

I spoke to a gentleman in Sheffield earlier at the police station who had my file in front of him.

They do the local checks.

How did you do your teaching practice if you didn't have a valid CRB? In NHS land you just transfer CRB from one employer to the next and it last 3 year I think it is...

I would think he did but with the authority within which he was teaching.

Indeed - I had no idea it was so archaic in England! We have the PVG Scheme through Disclosure Scotland up here and it's a one-off payment which covers you for life.

Best of luck MoseyMTB - that sucks.

Yep, same as all the other 'restrictive' practices/registrations crap that each Govt has piled upon us. Many jobs have passed me by due to this too.

Yeah teaching crb's only last a year so it runs out when the course finished.

From this year you can subscribe to an update process that is £13 a year and new companies can just look you up. Which is great but doesn't help me at all now.

I just want to work in the profession i trained as. My chin is up though, i suppose i can ride my bike whilst i look for work.
