99p for a pint in the Swan, blimey you guys must be a bit younger'n me then; Red Stripe in the Turf was only 71p a go, when I saw the neds upstairs at the Mitre (fell down them stairs a few times too!) Not a big fan of Neds or the stuffies, though saw a both a few times back in the day, much to the chagrin of my (rather younger) better 7/8th's, who's a big fan!
Dunno about the Swan, but I think the Turf's been a Pizza express for years now. Shame, Mrs. H kept a good pub. (wanders off to clean rose tint from spectacles..) Happy days. 8)
TooTall - MemberDead on arrival, the 90s revival...
I take it you've not seen Cud recently then? As good as they always were
It's a Carter lyric ❗
So bring me some aspirin, some rope and some Valium
Turn on the gas rings and call the Samaritans
And sit back and take in the gospel and bible
Of the lip smacking, jaw breaking, rip roaring 90s revival
Anyone remember an all female group called Angelica? No me neither, but I play in a band now with the ex-drummer, and she never shuts up about it. 🙂
Just got tickets to see Jesus Jones, Miles with a bunch of people that weren't in the Wonderstuff and Graham from PWEI on the same bill.
Stourbridge kid here as well. Seen them all more times than I care to remember in venuews of varying sizes - but can't help think that the Stuffies died with The Bass Thing, and the Poppies aren't the Poppies without Clint.
Big carter fan me. I saw them at some dingy club on the Cowley road in Oxford one year and 18 months later they were either headlining or supporting at reading. Must have seen them 20 times inbetween.
Naturally went off them when jonbeast departed.
Wasn't such a big fan of neds but liked them still. Their music was very much of the era and should be considered in that context.
I particularly liked the Jesus and Mary Chain, the fall and a very young spiritualized.
Jesus Jones
I've ridden with the lead singer.
More of PWEI fan than Ned's.
yes
I find that Armchair Anarchist seems to have become more relevant as time has gone on
I'm a marked anarchist
Yes, I'm being totally honest
In fact, just the other morning
I was planning a bombing
Firstly, the House Of Lords
then on to the Brit Awards
Singing
"Bomb the idiots"
"Bomb all the idiots now"
"Bomb the idiots"
"Bomb all the idiots now"
First gig ever was Wonderstuff with Neds supporting at Preston when I was 16. Saw NEDS all over the place. Slept in Glasow to see em at the barrowlands and faith No More were on the next night with L7 supporting.
Some others :
doughboys (supported MC4 loads of times)
Captain America
Scorpio Rising
the sundays
Drive (No girls)
Levellers 5
Five thirty
Early boo radleys were good. The core of MC4, Senseless things, Neds , Kingmaker and stuffies were excellent for about 2 years. New FADS underrrated.
(slips off into a nostalgic haze and digs out vinyl)
Apparently Ned's Atomic Dustbin are playing in Wolverhampton soon. Saw the flyers up today and it bought back memories
New FADS underrrated
This. Times lots. For the first album anyway. Pity their later stuff didn't work quite as well.
EDIT: oh, and if we're all determined to reminisce ourselves into a haze of cheap hash and snakebite, let me also suggest Catherine Wheel, Chapterhouse & the Paris Angels
I got off with Mikki from Lush!
And the hot blonde indy chick was Tracy Tracy from the Primitives - not that Wendy James wannabe
I can't believe the distances we travelled to go and see The Hunters Club. I think I still have my God Sent Us t shirt in the loft. All the junior Mission fans would hassle us for our shirts as Simon Hinkler wore one in a video.
Anyone remember Dawn After Dark? Not really grebo but they wore black jeans tucked in para boots.
while we're on the subject of cheap hash...
what ever happened to red and gold seal resin?
Its all brain mangling skunk these days.
kids eh? 🙂
2nd post sums it up perfectly
Only one good song
Still, one more than James ever had
I feel like getting shitfaced now on snakebite and black and going to rock city in nottingham on a Thursday night 🙂
Those were the days 🙂
Oh dear God, I'd forgotten about James....
And the Levellers.........there are no words the Mods will allow to describe my thoughts on them
Winston, you bastard! 😉 lucky git!
Crashtestmonkey,12rounds look interesting, I'll check them out. I quite like some of NIN and Tool's stuff, I tend to prefer my loud music to have a bit more going on than the usual metal, Gang Of Four being one such. Quite why they were never bigger than they were is a mystery to me.
I did go and see The Hunters Club once - think I bought a record and think I liked them but can't remember anything else about them!
I'm currently listening to Curve's Peel Sessions - loads of messing with feedback on Split Into Fractions - still sounds great.
Tindersticks are still one of my favorite bands (I'm a fairly happy bunny - honest!).
Spacemen 3 anyone?
This thread brings back some memories. I have played with about 60% of the bands mentioned here on the same bill. In fact I played in a couple mentioned here. That Ned's T-Shirt design was designed by the singer Jonn's then gf who was doing the same course as me at Uni. The Lesbian dope heads moniker was also the idea of a girl I used to go to school with who ended up being a good friend of the band (she wanted to start a tribute girl band IIRC). Oh Hicksy does this jog any memories?
I'm afraid the people who's wi-fi I'm stealing have got youtube blocked! I'll have to have a look tomorrow at work!
I'm afraid the people who's wi-fi I'm stealing have got youtube blocked! I'll have to have a look tomorrow at work! 😯
Don't worry, they know I'm stealing it!
What band were you in Rotor Stern?
Not sure much stuff from that era has stood the test of time really... The Sundays have probably aged the best. Wonder if they'll ever get round to delivering their 4th album!
My Dad enjoyed taking the micky out of me wearing a t-shirt with Lush on it!
I was the stereotypical indie kid of that era.
cons/band tshirt & bob haircut.Ha.
Loved the stuffies & pwei & nearly killed myself travelling in a snowstorm to go and see the neds supporting the sandkings at huddersfield uni!Saw Cud alot and jesus jones, never liked carter usm tho'.
Can't face the wonderstuff now as mh is'nt a nice fella.
ace thread.
EAT were the best band of the era. I can still listen to their stuff, whereas nearly all of the others sound crap.
Ange Dolittle = underrated genius.
Don't care if you disagree. I'm right.
"while we're on the subject of cheap hash...

kids eh?"
Come round for a brew sometime and I'll show you!
Eat! Agree with you on that one. Happy shopper, tombstone... And my favourite - I saw the fat man do the shiiiiiiiiimmmmmy. Saw them at the old JBs, Ange could rock that harmonica.
Yep, saw them live in 1989 when they and EAT supported the Wonderstuff on their "HUP!" tour.
Ned's were very, very bad. And, yes, they were famously the only band (at that time) to sell more t-shirts than albums.
Anyone remember an all female group called Angelica? No me neither, but I play in a band now with the ex-drummer, and she never shuts up about it.
Blimey yes, I brought their first single!
forgotten about eat. agreed.
what about balaam & the angel - a little earlier maybe?
I love much of what's been mentioned so far. My fave band of the time though were Joyriders. Great bunch of guys who should have been huge.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=jad60GImkTo
Neds at wolverhampton on 1/12/12 and then the stuffies, jesus jones and pwei at brum o2 on the 22/12/12 for me this festive season 😀
Got to agree about EAT, saw them play the main stage early afternoon then come back and do second on the bill to Blur in the tent at Reading, they were a band that should've gone further as they were awesome live
Haha, all this old bands remind me of the time I spent working par-time in a Grunge club in Camberley throughout the 90's, right laugh and most of the crowd were a good bunch though I wasnt really into the scene, much better than the arses that turned up on the dance nights.
Think I either heard all the bands listed above several times a night or saw at least half of them live.
Easiest bar job ever, it was either Snake Bite Blacks or JD and cokes, usualy ended up drunker than the patrons, happy days.
grum - MemberAnyone remember an all female group called Angelica? No me neither, but I play in a band now with the ex-drummer, and she never shuts up about it.
Aye, I remember their song Why Did You Let My Kitten Die. Think I saw them supporting Ash or someone like that.
Remember Hunters Club supporting Neds at Birmingham Hummingbird in about 1989/90
They were pretty good - went a bought their EP with 'Aint See Nothing Yet' on it.
Another couple of bands I remember fondly from back then are The Telescopes and The Moonflowers (both somewhat different).
Used to be a big fan, seen them live a few times, local band playing to local fans at smallish gigs normally always adds up to a good atmosphere.
Kill Your Television
Margin Walker do you know Marcus(bendy leg) or Fletch. Big travelling Neds fans back in the day. Used to go round to Stig's house, the origional bass player from Scorpio Rising who were an Alien Heat, for regular tea and biscuits.
PWEI are lacking Clint but saw them earlier in the year and they were O.K.
Haha, all this old bands remind me of the time I spent working par-time in a Grunge club in Camberley throughout the 90's
So that'll be the Agincourt then. You might know my wife and her best friend then, they were regulars. I was an occasional.
Got tickets for PWEI / Wonder Stuff / Jesus Jones in december. I saw the Stuffies and the Levellers recently, they've both still got it. Some of Miles Hunt's recent acoustic / solo / him and a girl (Erika Nockall) is prety good too.
Big spaceman 3 fan here
Oh spent many nights at Agincourt and then Sunday Nights at Washington Heights in Reading
Never a huge Wonderstuff fan due to Miles Hunt but shocked to find out that Rob Jones died so young.
