100% don't get it. We had dogs when I was a kid. Yeah they are great fun to mess about with for a bit but **** the responsibility. My dad used to get me out of bed to walk the dog, at least in those days it was socially acceptable to let pooch poo in the gutter.

These days you have to pick up poo in a little bag! I mean, how anyone thinks they can maintain dignity whilst holding a bag of poo is beyond me. And some people say that owning a dog is a way to finding romance. Really, people PULL whilst holding a bag off poo??!

If that is the case, then I think I will skip the dog, poo in a bag and stand in the park whistling 'till mrs right come along.

We have a dog & a cat, I 'quite like' both of them but find them a hinderance (dog in particular)
Whenever we go away on holiday in the UK we always have to look for dog friendly places, if we go abroad we have to get someone to look after it. My wife's pocket are full of poo bags, if we do a mucky walk the dog has to be washed, (& I hate the smell of wet dog) there's hairs everywhere, the dog usually barks to be out on a morning before I want to get up, she's not covered by the NHS so is insured for vets bills....
I don't buy all this 'loyal friend' bollox either, sign of an insecure owner if you ask me.
We were up in Northumberland at the weekend, she was running about on the beach & suddenly stopped & started limping, wife phoned the vet & was advised to rest it which meant she had to be left in the car if we wanted to go for a walk, it was hot so we couldn't go far even though I left the windows open a bit. Then on Saturday night she started puking in the room which continued all night (probly to do with the dead crab she tried to eat) so the mrs was up cleaning puke off the carpet.
Dogs? PITA.

& I don't like kids either.

Pets, just a mouth and an arse IMO.

Then they die.

I was bitten by a mosquito the other day, which came as quite a shock as I didn't realise they lived in this country. Apparently flapping your arms around and screaming "GET OFF! GET OOOOFFFFF!" is an inefficient method of removal.

Yeah, not keen on them. Or ticks.

But dogs and cats are ace.

Can you imagine when it's a white Pyrennean, weighing near eleven stone?
That's Mac, one of my brother's dogs. Beautiful animal, utterly adorable, but I'm damned if I'd want the responsibility of looking after him.
Or Honey, their Golden Lab, who's a gorgeous dog, very intelligent, but same caveat applies.
I prefer cats, but being allergic, and liking having birds in the garden counts them out too. I like animals, but, as has been said, they are a tie, and I've got so used to just being able to go out when it suits.
Maybe a python? Or a bunch of geckos running around the place, keep the bugs and flies down. I could go for those.

all the best Kerv.

wouldn't be without my spaniel. bloody pain in the ar5e routinely but it's immaterial.

i forget the words exactly but Hemingway postulated that people who didn't give a to55 about animals were fundamentally missing something, but also opined that those who cared too much for animals were often capable of supreme cruelty towards other human beings.

Which would equate to something like 40% of the UK being into bum sex

1.5% of the UK populace are gay, lesbian or bi. 49% of the UK are women.

By my ready-reckoning, that means that around 80% of women must like bum sex.

Pets are fine. Its their owners that can't be bothered to train or discipline them, pick up their faeces and when they get ill insist on keeping them barely existing in pain and suffering.

They do that with children too. Shortly after they give the pets away on freecycle.

That'll be this Hemingway, eh?

I don't want a pet, so I must be missing something, but I have no desire to go sticking swords in animals either, or to watch someone else doing it ...
Pets are a hobby, and like other hobbies, some people want to spend their time on pets, some people don't. It's up to you.

My dog triggers a chemical reaction in my brain which makes me go, "Awww", and I give him a biscuit. I've kept fish, hamsters, mice, rats, cats, newts, terrapins, snakes and lizards.

None has triggered the awww response in quite the same way. Our development as a race is closely tied in with dogs. Cats were (and are) very useful for keeping the pests at bay. Dogs are great at security in the modern world and were quite likely useful in the past for procurement of food.

But for me, the main reason to own a dog is to feel that brain buzz at least twice a day when eye contact happens and you both know it's time for a walk in the rain / sun / sleet. I was going to say something about your soul soaring, but then I remembered this is an STW thread about pets being shit, so I won't.

Hey Kerv,

Sorry to hear of your loss - a pet isn't just an animal, they are part of the family... I have found that in time, remembering gets easier and looking back to the good times you spent becomes a joy.

Take it easy,

J

If you don't have a connection with dogs you're missing something IMO.

Would kicking a dog in the teeth count as a 'connection'?.

I've never been big on pets and reluctantly agreed to getting a dog three and a half years ago. It is a lot of effort and expense and sometimes I wonder what I let myself get dragged into, but I wouldn't be without her now. Sorry for your loss kerv, I dread the day mine goes. 🙁

Only if you are a total ****.*

I can't stand Pets!

We have two dogs which cause no end of arguments. The wife bought them because she believes that kids should grow up with pets in their lives. however she does chuff all with them, it's always "Go see if the dogs want to go out, go see if the dogs want to come in, go see why the dogs are barking" I couldn't care less. They crap all over the garden and no body cleans it up, which was my only demand when they were bought. So mowing the lawn is a great experience.

I bought a house with a large garden for the kids, put a huge wooden playhouse and swings etc in it for the kid to play on. Because of the dogs they've grown up unable to use any of it because the garden is full of crap.

The only people who should be allowed to keep dogs are Koreans 🙂

Does anybody know how I can get one of those animal owner ASBO's so we're banned from having pets. Daughter wants a Lizard for her birthday in November and I'm running out of time.

There are 2 generally accepted methods-

1. Put a cat in a wheelie bin.
2. Set your dog on some children.

Pets are for people who have failed to find love amongst their own species.

dogs are cool. one day I will own one but right now I enjoy laying in bed a little longer and not picking up poo.

Cats are just crap and they are for crap people who think they like animals but really don't like animals. Cats are also want others to pick up their pets poo because they are lazy mad old women who smell. Death to all cats and their owners.

[edit]not all dogs are cool some are really annoying; the annoying breeds should also be killed along with their owners [/edit]

Got some "low maintenance"* pets which I'm quite fond of but no way a dog. Most of the people I know build their entire life around it. Mind the oft spoken phrase "Well, we'll best get back home for the dog." is welcomed when uttered by certain people... 🙂

*rabbit, hamster, African snails, fish.
