New to this so bear with me. Got a website someone did for me a while ago (but can't get hold of them now)I can log in and do the pages text and pics editing no problem, but the main background that appears on all the pages has some wording on the bottom (footer?) I need to alter, but I can't find how to change this. Any help on where to find this main background bit in the wordpress admin editing area appreciated. Cheers

Appearance and then Widgets. The text will most highly be in one of the footers. Mine has three footer sections.

Thanks, can get into 'appearance', editor bit says I can't edit oddly, but can find footer in 'theme options' which shows copyright text to edit but no other footer sections - I am trying to change some words above the copyright text. Will keep looking, thanks for tips so far

ps - I can't see widgets in the appearance section on this

You have to find the footer.php file and edit it directly in the dashboard (it's actually easier than it sounds) - go to Appearance > Editor then find the footer.php file on the right. Look for the info you want to change and edit there

Looks like the guy who did it for me has locked or got some kind of admin rights as I can't open the editor page, says no access, pita as can't get hold of him now. Need to come up with plan B. Thanks all anyway.

Where is it hosted? Is it on proper hosting somewhere, not Wordpress.com? If it is Wordpress.com, then you are limited in how much you can customise.
Are you able to access the hosting in any other way, eg FTP, or a control panel?

It is possible to create an admin account using FTP: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-an-admin-user-in-wordpress-using-ftp/
