Do I need to use a cable that has an hdmi on both ends, the monitor and the dvd player has hdmi sockets.
However i've bought a vga/hdmi cable, will and HDMI/HDMI cable enable me to watch my BSG dvd's

I'd suggest a HDMI > HDMI cable would be easiest all round. Tesco Value cable, fiver.
