Russell Pinder is his name and Russ Appeal was the charity.

What was the outcome of that court case?

iirc it was settled out of court, and the terms of the settlement was never revealed.

Stoner (spoomplim) attended the court case (hopefully his vanity search will bring him over to give more details). Worth pointing out that as much as they'll claim not to be admitting liability by doing so, companies don't generally settle something as landmark as this if they think they're likely to win the case (nor is it the only out of court settlement in the UK for a disc brake wheel ejection).

I was thinking that - basically admitting guilt without officially doing so...

admitting guilt without officially doing so

or just decidign that the actual (and potential) costs of continuing outweighs the cost of settling.

It will have been an insurance companies lawyers that made the decision not the importers of the bikes.

Well given they'd thought it worth taking the case to court, and had already spent all the money on that (the only significant ongoing expense being an award of damages), something clearly changed in terms of their perception of the strength of their case.

I've still got the hose clamp on my QR nut, which was my high-tech solution to the problem when I made lots of tests years ago...

May as well delete it now...

Stoner, did you know Russell then? I went on a group ride with him once and one of my mates... I might've ridden with you?

Russ used to ride with the guys who taught me to ride back in 2001ish I guess. I met Russ once at the club dinner one year.

It was ooh... 2002 I suppose? I was on a fairly new Pace RC200, my mate Martin was on his Specialized I think, he got an Ellsworth later. We went on a fairly long ride incporating part of the ridgeway.. I crashed badly and really hurt myself and no-one seemed to care much ๐Ÿ™‚

I think his accident was March 2003 - the month I started mtbing! I joined London MTB and he rode with them so heard all about it as I was getting into riding.

Excellent! Met him briefly at the Checkendon 'Ride for a Flight'. There was an interview with him in STW a couple of years ago where he said he'd moved on to new challenges.

Although I have not met him I am glad to hear that is well.

I recall the moment it was posted on STW at that time and it was very hard for him and everyone around him.

Gosh ... that was 10 years ago? Jeesssuusss ... I have been sitting in front of the pooter surfing STW that long ...!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ... need to get out more and to sort out my life.

I have a Jo Burt tee shirt from that era, bought to support the charity. And as above, I too often think of Russ. Especially when I'm riding down 'The Gap'.

I still have a few Jo Burt T shirts left for sale, all proceeds to Air Ambulance
The site is a bit borked at the moment, just waiting for the admin guy to fix it.
