[#10910443]

Last few days I've had white hot, sharp pains in my right abdomen lasting for about 5-30 seconds. Probably about an inch below my ribcage. Pain comes, nothing alleviates it (e.g. pressing on the area etc) then it goes and there is no residual tenderness at all. Happens 3 or 4 times a day for no apparent reason.
Any ideas? Trapped nerve or something? Haven't had any accidents or injuries recently. By 'eck does it hurt though.

appendicitis maybe?

Seems a bit high - mine was down near the pelvis.

My 2p: go and see a real life doctor who can have a prod at you.

Nah..we're all being replaced with apps and algorithms etc etc... no need to see ANYONE now.. you just need a smartphone and a deathwish...

DrP

(probably sensible to see a real doctor though... but I call gallstones?)

Loads and loads of potential causes - seems a bit short-lived to be grumbling appendix, but maybe. Might be as simple as constipation or a muscle spasm. As usual, go see a real doc if it keeps happening, or if the episodes get more frequent/last longer.

Ignore it till the symptoms get far worse, then it will be easier to tell whats causing it.

Those are Braxton Hicks - wait till the real contractions start, then you'll know what sore is! Oh, did you not know you were pregnant?

Gallstones. Certainly liver / bile duct related. Too high for appendix.
Go and see a doc and get an ultrasound arranged.

Yeah I'm going with that for now. Shingles not a bad shout, I had it in my twenties and it felt similar although that was on my face. Hoping it's not gallstones...

Where's David Baddiel gonna stick those fingers and why is he smiling like that?

I'd be worried if I were you OP.

My Mrs (GP) says probably gall stones, apparently your pain is called biliary colic. You need to see your GP.

Or cat aids, the bad kind

Have you actually tried to see a GP with sudden acute abdo pain? From what I can see, and I base it on my own experience, those of family and colleagues (so at least 6 or 7 doctors practices, around the country), with adults, children etc - if you call up with sufficient detail of a genuinely concerning set of symptoms you will get seen.

When I had pancreatitis caused by gall stones the pain would last for hours and not seconds.

But was probably more advanced than yours.
Anyway, get it checked as I got rushed to a&e and spent 10 days in hospital followed by surgery a couple of months later.

Well, if you’re the chap in my recent clinical reasoning exam it’s kidney stones but only present on one side as you had previously donated a kidney to a sister. You’re also suffering acute kidney injury and might have autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease 🤔 . I *may* have got carried away on that particular paper.

Have you checked you’ve got two kidneys? Have you? Have you a sister? Have you donated a kidney and forgotten?

(Yep, ask a real doctor but Gaul stones sounds a good shout)
