Out for a walk with my 5 year old lad yesterday on a beach. A guy with two American bulldogs off leads shouted from a way off that the dogs were harmless but to expect them to run up to us and for the dogs to playfight each other. Instantly thought of this thread and it was good to the owner to call out and warn us but wondered why he didn't call the dogs back.
10 seconds later one of the dogs has bounded up at to my lad, jumped up knocked him to the floor and cutting his face with the paw that made contact. The second dog then pounced on the first, I grabbed my son up off the floor and left the two dogs rolling about.
Lucky my son is really confident with dogs and shrugged it off, I wasn't up for a row however I did politely state to the owner that a lot of kids would have been petrified and parents wouldn't be so good about it. Owner half apologised and walked on, the two dogs play scrapping and growling at one another.
Guessing now he didn't recall as they won't, but as someone contemplating buying a fairly small dog I am left wondering if the situation could have been a lot worse all round.

Not sure you are.
And, no, i still can't use the ******* quote function.
Heres a thing, when approaching walkers, especially families that are not too aware, do you prefer a ringing of the bell or a polite shout as a warning?
Persoanaly I don't mind as long as I'm warned in good time so I can get my dog out of the way if needs be, but equally when riding sometimes I get no responses at all when riding until I'm literally right on thier heels, and thats back peddaling a hope hub and dinging my bell like a mad man.
Sometimes you just can't win on shared paths, some people are just willfully ignorant despite best efforts, I've had occasional abusive language both when walking the mutt and when riding.

That's a classic example of an arsehole dog owner who should know better, and I say that as a dog owner.

That's shit isn't it, American Bulldogs are bloody big things, I remember one running at me once, it wasn't a comfortable situation at all and I love dogs and am confident around them. Luckily for me this was years ago back when we lived in Reading (American Bulldogs were the latest status dog) and my lurcher was a lot younger and she intercepted said dog and led it a merry dance as it chased her round the park. Turns out the dog was a playful friendly type but it was a proper, oh shit what do I do now moment.

This, very much this.

After a couple of incidents on shared paths with elderly people who've not heard my bell and then chastened me for not hearing my bell, despite me ringing the sodding bell, I like to call out in a friendly voice that I'm passing by on either the left or right to anyone I see ahead travelling in the same direction, or otherwise looking distracted. That usually does the trick. I'm not averse to slowing to a complete stop to allow people in front to corral their kids/pets etc, it's all about making sure that everyone enjoys being outside and sharing the space wisely.
That's not to say that I don't encounter dickish behaviour (see my posts a couple of pages back), but I try not to give anyone any ammunition to ruin our respective days.

I tend to slow down and sometimes stop for very small kids, but dogs not so much. You have to remember that the TPT, for example, is a designated cycle route. People have no business being surprised by the presence of cyclists.
For example, today a bunch of ramblers or photography club members are all taking photos of some bird or something in a bush and they are all over the trail. I ring my bell and they very obviously move as slowly out of the way as possible whilst looking at me like I'm covered in dog shit or something :D. Miserable ****ers.
I may also add that a bell is a double-edged sword.
Inexperienced people or idiots are often either startled and bolt laterally like a headless chicken or they do a classic manoeuvre of craning their neck around which always involves planting their foot to the side. I don't understand these people. If they hear a bell, what do they expect it to be? A space ship? The more astute trail users just maintain their course or move left.
...don't get me started on dumb-ass groups who part like a sea inviting dogs, kids or even adults to randomly jump out in front of you to cross to the other side of the group. Makes my piss boil lol. Move to one side of the ****ing trail as a group ffs!
Having said that some of the most dangerous trail users are other cyclists with covid bringing out people who have no business on a bike. The trail has a tacit rule of keeping left but some people MUST pass oncoming bikes on their right. I've come very close to an accident a couple of times because of this, also idiots over-taking and misjudging oncoming bikes.
Blimey, do you want some vinegar for those chips
Our last dog was an 8.5 stone, long haired GSD. Looked like a killer attack dog, behaved like a lap dog. Cuddling and claps governed his life.
People used to cross the road when they say him, even at heel, in the short lead.
Of the dozens of people I told, "he hardly ever bites anyone", only one person got the joke. People are xxxxx.
Do you blame people crossing the road when confronted by an 8.5 stone dog? How are they supposed to know that it's friendly? It's a potential killer and there is no need for anyone to own such an animal, IMO.

BAN THIS SICK FILTH
@failedengineeer,
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What a fanny!
How the hell did you get confronted with, from my post?
The daily mail phoned mate, they need their outrage back. ****!
People are xxxxx
Very true, you don't need to prove it on here though
Dogsplaining when people with dogs explain dog stuff in a often condescending manor to people who don’t own, like, have any interest in or are afraid of dogs.
@panhandj - I stand by what I said. You made it sound like people were crossing the road to avoid the dog. I wouldn't blame them. I still think dogs that size should be banned under the dangerous dogs act. Get yourself a Yorkshire Terrier/Dachsund/Poodle if you must have a dog.
You are correct! I bit and I shouldn't have. I am sorry.
Now be a good boy and run along to the Indyref2 thread and apologize for all the times you've done it? There's a good boy!
Good for you mate, stick by your principles!
Even when you are basing them on two sentences on a bike forum. This country could do with more decision makers line you!
Oh wait...
****!
Look man, I don't understand your problem; just accept that not everyone loves dogs and in fact, some people actively dislike or are scared of them. Simple.
So because you don't understand, people shouldn't be able to enjoy, perfectly legally, things you don't get?
No probs mate, enjoy the Tories!
I'm off to take my pup for a walk.
On a short lead, at heel...
****!
I’m well in the category of moving across the road. An 8.5 stone killer attack dog with hair straighteners? No thanks.

I hate to break it to you but the dangerous dogs act isn’t based on some sort of canine size scale and Poodles are massive depending on the variant. I’ve been bitten twice and chased a few times. Both bites from small dogs, one being a Yorkshire Terrier and the other a Jack Russell. All chases have been from medium sized dogs. Come to think of it most have been Collies.
I’ve owned two big dogs in my time. A Newfoundland and a chunky lab. Both were wonderful, cuddly, dopey bastards and I miss them dearly.
Dogs are nicer than humans. Fact.
An 8.5 stone dog could just be a fat lazy one like a very greedy chocolate Labrador
Wow, this thread escalated in exactly the way page 1 predicted.
I haven't read all 9 pages but will say that every responsible dog owner I know expects that people should ask permission before petting their dog, they also expect the dog to be given permission before saying hello to people.
Simple rule, but not everyone gets it.
Also, in my experience of growing up and living around dogs now, it's the little ones you gotta watch out for. They are often seen as less risk so people don't train them as well because they can be dragged around.
But I don't currently own a dog, so what do I know?

*irony alert*
I have a mate that works in A&E and statistically the most common bites on admissions are from Daschunds. Proper nasty little ****ers they are, bite and don't let go. I've had one square go my 35kg greyhound for no reason (who just reacted with his usual confusion and sadness when another yappy little twit came over for a fight).
Had GSDs in the past, yes they're intimidating to look at but far better natured than any of the dogs you listed.

Rule 1 really. As someone said before and then utterly shot down for it, people just need to be nice to each other.
Tatton park is good for those of you who don't want to enjoy a family picnic, enjoy seeing your three year old flinching and like to share your cake with dog babies as we found out on sat.
Lots of long leads and turds to negotiate as well for extra fun.
Poodle
Poodles actually make epic attack/police dogs - the problem is, is that most people laugh at the sight of them so they end up having to be used in bitey mode more.
I had to Google what a GSD was. Does the acronym have a "D" at the end to differentiate them from human German Sheppards, which if you walked one of them around the park on a lead carrying it's shit in a bag you'd get strange looks (reminds me of an episode of Eurotrash)
Probably 😂
The D gets put into a few dog acronyms to make it up to 3 letters I think. Dunno why other than it seems to roll off the tongue better.

Bites are bad but life-changing injuries and deaths are worse. Only some breeds of dogs have the ability to kill.
What makes you think a Daschund couldn't inflict life changing injuries? There's a reason people are referred to A&E and not minor injuries (which if you look at the criteria are anything but).
I feel sorry for those who haven’t/not able to experience the love/companionship of a dog 🙁
Yep, you would think a cat couldn't cause life changing injuries but a man where I work was bitten by a kitten and a week later had to have his arm amputated. He clearly left any warning sings too late but quite shocking nonetheless.

That's due to secondary infection.
So I was going to post something about tolerance and that I'd not had any particularly negative experiences with dogs/dog owners however I've had 2 of the buggers run at me snarling this morning...2 different owners in unrelated areas.
I didn't even see where the 1st had come from, I was riding along an open section of trail, hadn't seen anyone with a dog and all of a sudden this bloody thing is chasing me snarling.
For balance I did happen across some very pleasant folks who were very much in control of their animals so not all dog owners are a$$holes.
A lot of deer roaming about this morning too.

I have two surrogate dogs. Two of my local mates have dogs and I go out for a stroll with them when they walk them. Some of these walks surprisingly end at the pub (this happened for the first time in ages agin last night). So I get to experience the upsides without having to pick up their shit, feed them and my house and car don't smell of wet dog
Result! 😀
I weigh not much more than 8.5 stone. No-one crosses the road to avoid me.

Curling one out on the pavement should work wonders.

Plus you save hundreds/thousands of pounds on insurance/vet fees. And no emotional bond = no grieving when they expire.
Job done, I’d say.

Try wearing a vest, reversed baseball cap, and carrying a plastic bag of Stella, with one open for the journey home.

Wow, if you are not a doctor already you need to sign up quick smart.
