this is what I didn't get about my little 4od foray. I hardly ever watch live TV so I very very rarely have to watch adverts, just seemed a bit of a pisser having to sit through them if you forget to record something and have to watch if on catchup.

You certainly don't have to sit through them - I never do. Simply start the programme, mute the sound on the player and do something else whilst it plays the first set of ads. Then click the slider at the bottom to each section of the programme in turn and go away and do something else whilst each set of ads play. When you've done all that - which only takes seconds of your time - you can sit and watch the whole programme ad free.

How are we dealing with the growing ad-blocking problem? We are developing revenue streams that are not dependent on them. This is working quite well for us. 5 years ago 85% of our revenue was from advertising - Now it's about 65%. I'm hoping that in a year or so that will be 50/50 but then I can't predict what will happen in the publishing world next month, let alone next year... so we'll just keep adapting as we go..

I would suggest that you'll do much better than a lot of places who seem to be trying to take the same outdated approach record companies did to Napster then.

And fwiw, if you'd not been so daft last time you and I had this discussion you'd have had a digital subscription out of me by now, seeing as the only reason I stopped being a subscriber originally was because I tried twice to renew magazine subs and never got anywhere, then I moved to Oz.... But, as I'm "still not a customer", I guess I'd better remain that way for now 😉

Not knowing that the Guardian had a club, I might well head over there and become "a customer" to them also
