My 2 cents. Someone (no matter how talented) working for an F1 team has no experience of hydro foils with different dynamics amd requirements amd operating at very dofferwmt soeeds amd in a different fluid. You wouldn't expect a top hydrofoil soealist to jump into F1 and be competitve first time round.

Whitmarsh was team principle for Mclaren, you're thinking of Adrian Newey who was with Red Bull and then BAR. He was also at Williams and Mclaren at times too. Usually when an f1 team is successful it's because he works for them.
Though it should be mentioned that Newey has also worked with LR-BAR. I'm not sure how much and clearly he still has his day job, but he has supposedly had some input.
Oracle out on The Great Sound this afternoon. We got a flyby too. About 20m away, full noise (literally) and liking good. But, they were still landing significantly often...
Our guests had a private tour around the Oracle team base, where amongst other things, Soft Bank was being cannibalised for their parts!!
It'll be interesting to see what happens on Saturday. It'd be awesome to see the Kiwis win before leaving!
Well it's getting late in the day for significant changes to Oracles boat now, so speculative guesswork could suggest an increase in boat speed by 5% ... but that's still falling short of ETNZ all round skill level and speed.
My punt would be that Oracle win the first race on Saturday, then ETNZ win all the others.
Larry Ellison will be quite annoyed at the moment.
Lets hope the design rules have stopped LE from throwing another massive cheque at the problem.
I'm not sure I can see Oracle coming back from this but we'll find out on Saturday.
I suspect that they'll close the gap a bit and win the starts but ultimately ETNZ will just sail round them upwind as that seems to be where they have a biggest advantage.

If they're touching down I wonder if they've tried altering the wing trimming system as this seems to be one of the major differences to ETNZ - or they could just be trying some new foil design.
I'd love to see how that wind trimming system works seeing as it's controlled 100% digitally. I bet this could be the biggest factor in the speed difference - I know a lot has been made of the foils but that might just be because they're actually visible while the control system is basically hidden.
How ironic it would be if Oracle was beaten by software!
You've also got to wonder if ETNZ were sandbagging during the RR - I really hope so 🙂

They built a 250m lead fairly easily in one leg and then 'lost' it.... today though, two bullets.

They did'nt cover Oracle yesterday and got got caught on the wrong side of a shift/pressure in changeable conditions.Which then put them on a port crossing of Oracle to round the windward mark and had to dip hard.And that was Jenga.

I was in Auckland the last time they were 1 win away from taking it. Sat on the balcony of a uni building looking out to sea where it would probably be hosted when they won.....

Well, they made that look easy. Good news for the future of the competition.
Overall though, once you get used to the novelty factor of the wacky racer 'flying boats' I don't think it is better watching or racing than displacement vessel proper yacht racing.

The main issue they still have though is that's it's still not a spectator sport as the boats are still (and will always be) over 1km away until the finish. I thought the TV coverage (the actual filming not BT) was great though and the drone footage was superb.
Brilliant result which was never in any doubt after yesterday.
It was the perfect race to finish on; oracle didn't make a single mistake, ETNZ simply sailed round them. Although Oracle managed to get the boat to go the same speed upwind, ETNZ sailed better angles 100% ofthe time and it was simply a question of when they'd go past them - not 'if'.
Also perfect teamwork on the NZ boat - it was a joy to watch.
Well done to them.... here's to the next one.
PS. The AC web site sucks too - probably run by the Yanks

Be interesting to see what the format is next time, whether they return to Auckland for the finals with the increase in European/decline in American interest, time zone differences, sponsorship requirements and whether the NZ government will invest heavily again.

Just to reiterate delighted to see the Kiwis win and Spithill made to look ordinary under pressure, fabulous sailor that he is but just too cocky for me.
