So how should I show my utter disdain on Saturday?

It’s a bit much to travel to Texas just to avoid seeing this on telly.

France is probably closer.

But what colour is it really?

Is this one of those blue/gold dress web based optical illusions?

In my immediate circle I'm the only Englishman, the other's are Canadian, 2 Americans, a Greek, an Irish, German and Aussie. We're gathering to watch it on't telly, I'm apparently expected to know the obscure details, one of the Americans is baking the quiche.

It'll be fun, no doubt, but then we do this for Eurovision as well, and I think will take this just as seriously

Just make stuff up:

That robe? Made from Welshman pelts during the reign of Edward II, mate!

The bank holiday is on Monday, it's actually for Nichola Urmenyi's birthday. At least that's what she tells me and that's good enough for me.

I am intending to make it like an episode of "Would I lie to You?" but I need to be careful, the German and Aussie are both medieval literature lecturers, so know quite a bit more than me about that sort of stuff!

So you need a kernel of truth to build you lies upon

royal robes have ermine on them

Ermine is fur - but from dalmatians.  101 dalmatians was a satire on the royal family

Some **** at work today said oh yes but you are happy to have the day off aren’t you…well actually I’d happily come into work if they’d have me in the opposite of a strike if that were an option.

I would happily give up this bank holiday in exchange for the abolition of the monarchy. Sounds like a fair deal to me

It's rumoured that Royal robes won't be worn - apparently he's wearing military dress uniform. No tiara's and gowns for princesses either. It's day dresses and suits, much like a royal wedding.

So a different part of the fancy dress box then, armed with all the medals from mummy for existing. The leaders prof many banana republics round the world must be delighted he is joining them as a fake military man

Can you lay out details of your service in the Forces so we can compare?

Precisely none what so ever. But then I’m not wandering round in the highest ranking uniform going with a chest full of medals given to me by my mother pretending that I have served in the armed services for 40 years

Personally I can think of no better way to celebrate this cost of living crisis than watching a man in an expensive carriage bimble to a church in a bling hat. Where he’ll be surrounded by pointless expensive artefacts from a bygone era.

And all for a mere 1/4 billion pounds of taxpayers money.

fake military man

After passing out from RAF Cranwell as a fixed wing pilot in 1971, he then joined the Navy and after qualifying, he served on a destroyer HMS Norfolk then two frigates, HMS Minerva and HMS Jupiter. In 1974 he qualified as a helicopter pilot and flew Wessex for the commandos from HMS Hermes. In 1976 he took command of a minehunter HMS Bronington.

You can call that 'fake' if you like, insulting anyone who has similar service, but tbh having never served your critique of how valid any veteran's service is, is utterly worthless.

Do you get different uniforms when you change rank? I thought it was pips or stripes or something.

Dress uniform might be different I suppose. It's a genuine question, it's not really something I know a great deal (or indeed, anything) about.

He made Field Marshal, Admiral of the Fleet and Marshal of the RAF on merit, did he? Won his 15 year long service medal in five! 🙂

At relatively junior rank, both commissioned and non commissioned it's mostly just the rank insignia ('pips and stripes') which changes. For senior officers there are embellishments such as red collar tabs for brigadiers and above in the army. The RAF and Navy have similar 'bling' for their senior officers.

No, and I've never heard anyone claim he did. They are honorary, ceremonial ranks because as King he is commander in chief of the armed forces.

I'm not arguing that some of his medals aren't a bit dubious, my issue was with someone falsely claiming his military service is 'fake' when he did genuinely serve. It is an insult to others who also served.

or as I prefer made up ranks so he can play dress up like the head of a banana republic and wear lots of medals with very silly names his mummy gave him. Even trump drew the line at silly uniforms as commander in chief

His mummy did not give him those foreign titles with the silly names. Just the British ones with silly names.

And if you really think the royal families love of shiny baubles makes them the same as Colonel Ghadaffi or Idi Amin, I think you need to have a little think
