Almost certainly an aircraft with its landing lights on. As there are two, one each side of the fusilage, at the wing root, you will only see one when the plane's at an angle. It could be on approach to Cardiff Airport, or circling ready to go into Bristol Airport. I see them coming over Chippenham all the time with their landing lights on. Different, of course to navigation lights, the coloured flashy ones.
