[Closed] Alcoholism - where to start helping a mate?

I don't know the full details yet, but a really good mate is in a bad place with the booze. I'm not adverse to a drink myself, but from what I understand, he's now pretty much dependent - booze early in the day, on brink of losing job, partner really worried about him etc. I have no idea where to start or how to approach the subject - he's not great at opening up to me when something is wrong, but I really want to do what I can to help. Any pointers from others who've been in similar positions?

Good work Dashed! Its a real friend who takes the time and trouble to do that. Fingers crossed that the detox all goes well and he gets back to some semblance of normality
