After some help/advice please,
Basically I like to change company that supplied/looks after my building alarm.
The alarm/sensors etc are common market makes by the looks of it.
Hopefully it might be just changing/re programing a few things in the control box?
(I spoke to one company and they said they have to refit everything! that can't be right can it?)
Can this be done?
Do I need to ask for a code or anything from my current supplier?
Is there certain words or phases I need to ask to help get it done?
Thanks for you help
Rob
Where in the country are you?
Shouldn't have to replace everything, assuming its not rented kit.
some companies like to lock the engineer code, so another company can't crash the panel and reprogram it, sharp practice and if you own the kit legally dodgy.
Some companies might want to replace the external sounder so it has thei logo.
Back in the day I'd crash the panel and reprogram it with a new engineer code, sometimes you could default the codes and leave the rest intact or try and get hold of the old engineer code, I'd be surprised if you'd get it from the current supplier though.
The only reason to replace kit is if it's crap or faulty.
Thanks James,
Wiltshire based,
along the lines of What I was thinking, all paid for so not rented and not very old kit.
New code/control panel makes sense.
just trying to find someone to take over might be hard, as might not be "worth" it for them
as not buying all new kit.
But nice to have confirm I don't need to buy all new kit, so if they say that I know they talk
rubbish and taking the piss and best avoid.
I used to be in the trade, got sick of it and quit in 2004.
I don't know any companies I could recommend in Wiltshire, not that they don't exist, I just don't know any.
Usually the smallish local firms are your best bet. Avoid like the plague Verisure or similar.
What we used to do, when I was servicing them, was turn up default the panel, assuming we could get a manual, reprogram and put our box on the wall. Intruder companies like the advertising. So will sometimes do a deal.
I can't advise on somebody in Whltshire.
But you should be able to change alarm companys easy enough, it can get a bit more tricky if you have a monitored alarm.
9 times out of 10 the panel can be crashed and the engineer code changed. What make and model panel is it?
is it a large company that looks ater it at the moment?
Chris
It's not particularly common when we take over sites but some customers when they change to us have managed to persuade their previous alarm co to set the engineer code to default (at a cost obviously). If your alarm is monitored you will have to arrange either cancellation or transfer to your new alarm co so worth the ask at the same time. If you own the alarm system (not leased) there is no inherent reason to change all the kit unless you are having lots of faults. If the panel is locked or some obscure closed protocol system then replacement of control panel and keypads will be required, external sounder will get done as no-one likes advertising a competitor. Detection devices are almost always generic, but there are occasional exceptions (rare ID biscuit systems are always fun to come across)
