So, got a date this week (first one in a long long time). Is this necessary (it was the subject of a discussion in the pub last night)?

If so, what one?

Do you smell?

Do you normally wear aftershave?

Do you shave?

Take care; nothing smells worse than a bloke who has splashed himself with some ghastly perfume. (I work in the fragrance industry so I'm very sensitive to naff smells). If you're going to do it, make sure it's something good like a Jo Malone or Tom Ford, both make very good quality, subtle fragrances with lots of woody ambery notes. Use it sparingly so that she only smells it close up. It should be subtle and low-key and shouldn't be strong enough to bother the other diners in a restaurant.

(Note to women: the worst thing you can do when going out is to reapply the perfume during the evening; you will spoil tha natural evolution of the perfume - what the French call "le sillage", or the wake - and overwhelm everybody near you with the smell. Your perfume isn't fading, you are becoming anosmic - in other words your nose is becoming saturated by the smell.)

Women's sense of smell is 1000 times more sensitive than a mans. Washing your face in Kourous is bad. Something expensive / sensitive to the nose and little of it to intrigue her to "get closer" marks you out as a classy individual without e desire to overpower your reluctance to have a shower.

Unless you turn up dressed like Guy Martins dirty laundry bag.

Be like Barry.

But in all seriousness. If you don't already wear a fragrance that you get on with, I would go with no.

+1 for Tom Ford

L'occitaine also do some nice ones (Vetvier is my current favourite)

Absolutely definitely not cheap aftershave, and always remember less is more.

A wee dab of something good on some of the pulse points is better than a face-full of the same stuff.
If you have deep pockets Creed Green Irish Tweed is classy and you have the body chemistry to carry it off.

Chanel bleu is nice. I've got enough for a couple of applications left in a 100ml bottle, if you want it can stick in post Tuesday.

No, just be freshly showered with hair washed. Still, what do I know as I don't even wear perfume.

Freshly showered isn't an option as I have to go straight from work. I work in an office, so I won't be sweaty or covered in oil, but still.... A wash in a basin is all I'll have.

Oh, and washing hair is not something I have to be concerned with 😆

I asked me mom and she said 'No more than a full thimble of Tabac'

Did anyone ever try using that little golden medallion off Yardley Gold bottles, (back in the 80s '- Times Of Plenty') you know, as a real medallion? Cos if so seems to me there was a bargain to be had...

And remember - Macho musk oil is mucho macho

Personally, I wear a dab of Nag Champa oil, if anything. I dab it on a woolen jumper, not on the skin.

It's OIL - DO NOT APPLY TO COTTON OR ITEMS THAT SHOW OIL MARKS!

YMMV.

[I'd concentrate on being washed and clean teethed if I were you]

Lanvin is one that I'll wear very occasionally (once or twice a year)

It's a subtle one, so you don't have to have a moustache/medallion/hairy chest to wear it

Creed Himalaya and Irish Tweed are where it's at. Grab a few samples to trial as the full size bottles aren't cheap.

Depends, 'aftershave' or 'eau de toillet', ones alcohol (with a bit of smell) to clean your skin after shaving, the other makes you smell nice.

Apparently you need different smells for day and night use.
To further add to this conundrum you also need different flavours for different outfits. So you need a suit fragrance, a jeans a shirt sunday lunch fragrance etc.
All far too confusing and waaaay too much effort. If you want my advice ( I will have had less dates than you in the last 10 years so prolly not) Hugo Boss Night in a small amount an hour or so before you meet the lucky [s]victim[/s] lady

She wants to meet you, not the perfume counter at Boots.

As long as you are clean, you're good.

Having said that, my ex gf used to wear Chanel Bleu and it was fab...

I've never worn aftershave and have been complimented on smelling nice several times (I've always used a fabric conditioner and prefer subtle nice smelling clothes to aftershave), although I still use Lynx Africa deodorant so my opinion doesn't matter!!

What are you, 15? 😛

FWIW I wear Issey Miyake as a daily wearer and I'm thinking about getting some Tom Ford for evening/dates etc.

It's not the cheapest though!

Unfortunately not, but I am a creature of habit and can't be arsed finding something else (this is part of the reason I never bothered finding an aftershave I like) 😳

No need, just be clean-ish, no 2day old pants or anything like that and you'll be fine. Don't do or wear anything unusual. Be yourself.

I wear these two all the time, but mainly because I like them. If you don't already have some that you like, I wouldn't bother trying to pick on that she'll like. Everyone is different and what might smell amazing to you will make her eyes water 🙂

As said above, just make sure you're clean!

Thanks for the comments folks.

I actually agree that I shouldn't start wearing it if I have never done so before. I will take cleansing products to work (and a spare set of clothes) and make myself presentable 😆

Currently going cheap in our local Aldi - a squirt behind each ear should do the trick 😉

most high st big brand boots/superdrug fragrance is vile and seems to made up of sweet shop smells which is fine for teenagers but not adults.

creed, ortiga, tom ford, hermes, aqua di parma, guerlain all good just find the one that suits you but dont smother yourself in it.

I use Papa Cheri by Fragonard, all the way from Grasse, Provence.

About 50 euros a bottle but it lasts forever

No idea if it does the trick but Mrs_d likes it on me

If you're not keen on perfume masquerading as aftershave give this stuff a go. Up close you will smell like a proper G&T.
