You can support this site and block ads for a few quid a year too.

Ads notwithstanding, if I wanted to pay to be treated with the same degree of contempt and childish, pissy replies to which I get subjected on this forum I would've had kids, recorded their teenage years and replay it on a regular basis.

£15 a year is a lot cheaper than having kids 😆

It wasn't a monetary comparison I was attempting to make but you've done well in helping make my point.

Fortunately, you get to be treated with contempt and childish, pissy replies for free if you choose.

In't STW brilliant?

With emotions that tightly spaced you should probably see a shrink.

Or ask your GP about HRT...

In't STW brilliant?

's alright, I suppose - a bit stiff. Wouldn't pay for it, though...

Very good Teasel. 🙂

Sat in a stationary car in a snowy car park for seven hours today. Choices of entertainment were my phone or "Europa und die Welt seit 1945". I read the book. Mobile data just winds me up. Because to be fair to STW it's not just this site that has a horde of aggressive salesmen blocking the entrance to the premises shoving flyers under your nose - it's most of the mobile Net I try to access be it finding a hotel for the night or trying to get a weather forecast. Back to traditional methods such as walking in and asking and "red sky in the morning... etc..

I work in this industry. Trust me, its going to get worse, the days of Minority Report style personal targetted marketing are much closer than you think. What you are seeing on STW is way behind what they could be doing.

hmmmmm - hopefully they'll learn who to leave alone, too
I mean, say I was ded cross* about Maserati ads; I could complain to Maserati UK, go and wind up a dealer, carpetbomb northern Italy, ... who knows what but maybe it'd teach them to f'off and leave me alone (or target me with ads for WW2 Lancaster bombers instead 🙄 )

*I'm not - sub plus firefox seems to mean that I'm immune. For now.

Re: closing the Maserati advert on iPad, don't click the 'X Close' button. Click the forum content to the side of ad instead. Not ideal but it gets rid of the full page advert without redirecting you away from the site.

This has been working fine for me, too.

It's a mountainbike forum. I can see why you'd lose interest.

The maserati ad on android tablet was difficult to close in that it was full screen and whatever you pressed went to the ad content. I've had to log in!

I'm not buying another one just on principle.

Wait, are we still talking about the ads or software in general? 😛

No ad blocking on my Safari, WWE Divas on every refresh, surprised there's not been a thread about that yet...

To add insult to injury, they have Absolute 80's on the radio where I'm working, and there's a sodding Maserati advert on there! When did Maserati become a mass-market vehicle, for chris'sakes!
But it is getting insufferable, I get the ad when I come on to the forum, when I open a thread, again when a thread refreshes after I've commented...

Just as an experiment I thought I'd try using DuckDuckGo, and the offending ad doesn't seem to be appearing, there's sometimes a brief flash of black, but that's all. All the other ads are unaffected, which is fine by me.
Not sure if you can bookmark a site on ddg; anyone know?

Yes, we are all aware of this...this is why the complaints about the forum, logout and adverts are so common...they could be doing much better, but they don't.

Reality probably means something else would have to give which is never a good pill to swallow.

has anyone successfully moved to Opera as their day-to-day mobile browser to effectively block ads?

Ive tried it when overseas to minimse data use (and load speeds) but it doesnt always render STW pages very well.

It does seem we still cant get the balance between the forum paying for itself and pissing off users.

Its not rocket surgery or brain science.

These pop ads aren't intentional they shouldn't happen like that.

Any suggestions Trimix?

If anyone does come up with an alternative mobile browser suggestion that solves the problem could they provide a link to a free download if there is one. Thank you.

Stoner, I use opera on android - always

I really like the way it renders pages, or rather, parts of them

What does it do badly ? (I don't watch video on the phone, is that it?)

Any chance of a quick lesson on where you got Opera from and how to install it on an Android phone please, Scardypants?

What does it do badly ?

e.g. it doesnt work with the format buttons here ^
although it will open the IMG dialogue box OK.

The Search box covers the "Shop" and "Premier"

Dropdown arrow next to your username (top right) doesnt bring up dialogue box to allow logging out.

None of it terminal, just a pity that either STW is not formatted properly, or Opera cant render properly. Im not going to hazard a guess as to which it is....

stoner - just off to work, screesnshots to follow in an hour or two; I don't think I "suffer" from either of those

Edit: I'm using the beta version (not mini, as per link up there ^) - pretty sure I've used more than 1 version before though, without noticing problems

Right, I did a switch from Google to DuckDuckGo as preferred search engine in Safari on the pad, and that seems to have done the trick! I've not lost any of the other ads, so that's all hunky dory as far as STW Towers are concerned, I just don't get the screen blocking Maserati ad.
Result. 😀

Did this go anywhere? I'm assuming it was never meant to be the case individual users get this multiple times a day, I still do, every time I start a new session on mobile. Do the powers that be need this feedback or is it already being looked into?

It's still a load of old **** on the mobile, but on the laptop with plugins it's fine.

Every time I exit all Chrome mobile windows of STW, and even if left open, every few hours I still get that ad ****ing up the page.

Wouldn't it be easier just to pay the £1.50 pm by direct debit?
I'm poor, but even I can afford the small payment for a ad free life and a well cool magazine.
I also pay for Grit.CX the same way (as they have bendy bikes)

I'm not raising as a complaint, just feedback.

Even if I did pay its unlikely I'd want to block ads anyway, my job means it's useful for me to see what ads are out there, the good bad and ugly.

not sure if this is the right 'ads thread' to post on but its the most recent, and i just felt compelled to post today.

im usually sat on my chromebook reading the forum with 'adblock plus' enabled. i want to support the site/mag, i pay a sub, so my conscience is clear about the ABP thing. the experience is great, no ads, not one, its quick, why are all you bods moaning about a few ads, they cant be that bad.....

ive just opened the site up on a works computer and WOWW, its bad! BIG maserati ad, banks, phone ads, just one big fairground experience, colour flashing all over the place.....quickly quickly, log in so the ads disappear cos i pay for my P to default to, ill be safe.

nope, even with my P, logged in, ive got bank ads, samsung phones, talkmobile, trainline, something called Nest smoke alarm.... i think its well out of order and i really sympathise with everyone moaning now.

i know we're not sposed to promote the use of 'you know whats', but really, when its that bad how can you not? i think its well OTT and the balance of paying for the site vs giving users a pleasurable experience has tipped alarmingly the wrong way.

this is my first ever post on the matter, didnt realise it was so bad, and just felt the need to show a bit of support for those 'moaners'.

EDIT: just opened it up again and am still astonished at the amount of ads im getting. jeep now, marks and sparks, theyre not even tailored to my search history or interests.
genuine question, am i mistaken in thinking the P got rid of ads? has something gone wrong somewhere? or is this really what its like for all 'P owners' all the time without 'you know what'?

Once you log in you then have to turn the ads off in your premier settings. It's not automatic.

One day we'll look back at the Ad funded internet model and wonder how we tolerated it. It can't last much longer with ad blockers becoming more and more popular...
