Can someone start a you said - NO you said thread where all these circular back and forths can be taken off line and the thread can continue with it's job, and the rest of us can contribute to the thread topic. It happens so often on multiple threads that it would improve the overall form experience. It would either be the longest thread - or the shortest thread as people could just like a But you said post, and the alternative viewpoint person could just like a But you miscontrued it post and they could keep liking the same posts ad infinitum while the rest of us can happily ignore it all
I just don't think I could gather up enough enthusiasm to dislike people I've never met as much as some of you lot seem to be able to.

Its tedious right? But how to respond to it? I would generally ignore because I can't be bothered but my post was like 4 lines long. Two of those lines literally state exactly what i thought.
And then someone comes along witha big ranty post spouting about hate on the internet. Why shouldn't i question what the **** they are talking about?
You could have asked a question in so many different ways - but you didn’t you started a pile on with people listing all the actors they don’t like - most but not all of which have not actually bothered to provide any meaningful critique of their acting ability.
Most of us could detect the nuance of the question: "In the context of acting, which actors do you struggle with?" vs "list one or two famous people you hate."
It must be exhausting constantly finding stuff to be upset about.

My partner has a theatre company, has been in East Enders, Silent Witness, adverts and a few other things. Doesn't do the agent thing anymore so it was all a while ago. It's always amusing when someone you know from theatre stuff pops up on the telly.

Won't hear a word spoken against the lunacy of Nic Cage. As one poster already said, a random film with Tom Hanks, or a random film with Nic Cage, it's Cage every time... Maybe we need the opposite thread "actors/actresses you rate"...? Then again, Hanks was in Private Ryan about a lifetime ago so there's that.
There are a lot of actors/actresses out there with one note performance. They seem to make ends more than meet by simply showing up and remembering lines and not annoying the money people and also, on top of that, they're a person who is in a film, who can also turn up at a premier. I guess the better ones have an identifiable character act they bring to everything.
I'm not sure I genuinely dislike actors. Lots I can't rate.

Vicky McClure. She was incredible in This is England and the prison visit scene with Stephen Graham (in one of the series) was jaw droppingly good. But then along came Line of Duty (and everything thereafter) and it was like she had been replaced by a wooden clone.

Yes, this is the key thing. Arnie, for example, isn't an actor but if you give him the right role, he's brilliant. Terminator and Predator, for example, didn't need any serious acting skills, just a killing machine in the shape of a human.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Trainspotting both suffered from casting Jack Nicholson and Robert Carlisle in parts they weren't really right for. Both are great actors, but just not right for the roles (Ken Kesey disowned the film over casting Jack Nicholson). Someone like John Goodman or Gene Hackman would have been better in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and I've always though Ray Winstone would have been much better as Begbie than Robert Carlisle - Begbie in the book is a huge hulking brute covered with scars and tattoos and Carlisle just doesn't pull off that level of menace.

IME, having been in the wrong place at the wrong time in a few Glasgow and Edinburgh pubs during the 80s,when it all kicks off, the Begbie character that Carlisle portrays were always the ones full of menace and cruelty. The big bruisers were easy to avoid, but those wee wirey fekers plugged into the moon, less so. 😉 🙃

This. Just for the avoidance of doubt. I think Shirleys casting in Happy Valley was exceptional.

I'm sure I read somewhere that this is why Danny Boyle cast Carlyle as Begbie, after Carlyle auditioned for another part: he said somethg along the lines of "it's small we mad f****r that's more frightening".

I do am-dram at the theatre down the road, started as part of a midlife crisis a few years ago having nver done ANYTHING before and love it. Wish I'd started earlier, but I think it's a bit late for me to try my hand full-time. I have though been invited to direct for the first time later this year, one of three one-act plays . Auditions are coming up soon and as mentioned above, casting is VERY difficult, even at am-dram level. You can be the best actor in the building but if you don't fit the brief, or you're not right opposite the other actor(s) then you won't get cast.

For some reason if someone is described as being a psycho I don't normally picture them as being huge. Or at least, not randomly violent psychos.

I guess it's all about perspective but for me having someone over six foot, jacked, and a randomly violent psycho doesn't quite sit right. Begbie seems more believable being 'normal' sized or even a bit small compared to the average person (but still strong as ****).
However, compared to malnourished drug addicts he probably was pretty big. But then I'm not sure if Ewan McGregor and Jonny Lee Miller really looked like typical drug addicts either.

I sort of admire Nicholas Cage for just the decades of commitment to be as relentlessly as Nick Cage as he can be in every movie he's in - I guess at least directors and studios can't say they weren't aware, and for not trading off the Coppola name. Agree about Keira, very limited. I have a conspiracy theory that Kate Winslet and Rachel Weisz are in fact the same person...Ever seen them in the same movie? No, no you haven't. FACT!
Also let's not forget Shia LeBeouf. How he still gets work will continue to be one of the unsolved mysteries of the universe.

Last year I spent a day filming with my colleague for a section of the Jack Whitehall show on Netflix. Her parts made the cut, mine didn't. Maybe Whitehall will show up in this thread saying White101 is a crap actor he can't stand watching.

From what I remember of the book, Tommy was the only guy in town who could go head to head with Begbie. In the book, Begbie was a huge violent beast of a man. Robert Carlisle played a different character.
I think you're right in that Tommy was the only character Begbie was wary of - think Renton says they'd had a fight and it came out pretty square? But I'm also pretty sure Begbie is not described as huge - I think book Begbie and film Begbie are not too far apart.
