I dont know the price, but I would consider John Lewis (they do mail order as well) as you get an extra years garrentee for nothing which is well worth having.

I have been really pleased with my own Aspire One.

It's good that JL do it explicitly, but "a two-year guarantee applies for the sale of all consumer goods everywhere in the EU (Directive 1999/44/EC)" so they're not offering more than you're already entitled to, and I wouldn't necessarily let the JL guarantee sway me if a cheaper deal was available elsewhere.

Thats interesting, when did that rule come in as I have not heard of it and no one has mentioned it (I am frustrated, not dening this rule exists!)? I had a friend who recently returned an expensive electronic photo frame at 14 months and was told they had no cover for it at all as it was more than a year old. Also my Canon SLR broke at 13 months and was not 'covered'.

I just tried looking up this directive on the web. It does not seem to be the same straightforward 'take it back within 12 months if faulty'- but extended to 2 years. It also seems very open to 'interpretation', so I would still at this point in time see John Lewis or other free extended offers as a useful bet.

Definitely agree with Midnighthour that an explicit shop guarantee will be easier to claim on, the directive's more akin to the Sale Of Goods Act. If there was little difference in price then I would be inclined to go with JL, my point is that a minimum of 2 years life out of consumer goods is legally accepted as a reasonable expectation anyway. It is a useful consumer right and it was covered in a recent article. The article does make it clear that few shop staff will be aware of it though, so go with a printout and be prepared for a discussion. I'd definitely make the effort for a SLR!
