I have just heard some woman on The One Show describe herself as 95% Vegan so have deciced to do the same.
From here forward I will spend less that 5% of my day eating meat etc
'A little bit pregnant'
maybe the 5% is all the animals killed during growing harvesting and transportation of vegetables
Is that a weird way of saying vegetarian?

No, she was preparing a chicken dish at the time. I think that she thinks that chicken meat some how doesn't count as long as you feel like a vegan when you eat it
If 95% of your meals are vegan then I would say you are 95% vegan.
My son's girlfriend is a lifelong vegetarian. She refuses to eat anything farmed, but perfectly happily catches and eats fish, and accompanies him when he goes stalking then helps to gralloch, butcher, cook and eat wild venison. Make of that what you will.
Vegan/vegetarian hate is cheap, even 100%
Make of that what you will.
Maybe animal life/welfare is her concern?
If 95% of your meals are vegan then I would say you are 95% vegan.
This. But some people like to find fault.
For the hard of thinking I suppose she should have said 'I eat a vegan diet 95% of the time' to prevent hole picking.
Yeah but that would have spoilt WCA's joke, which did make me smile.
Ok boomer(s)
Maybe animal life/welfare is her concern?
yes because fish are so happy to be hooked in the mouth, dragged from the water and either beaten to death or left to suffocate.
If you are 95% vegan that makes you an omnivore.
If you are 95% vegan that makes you an omnivore.
if you feel the need to point this out rather than just accept someone eats a mostly vegan diet, then you are a ..... ?
It's pretty hard to be 100% vegan anyway.
I'm off to start a thread about non-smokers who have a cigar on a stag do, and tee-totallers who have a glass of fizz on New Year's Eve. Hypocritical bastards.
Vegan/vegetarian hate is cheap, even 100%
It's also incredibly tedious. I'd have thought that pretty much everyone on this site would know what it's like to be part of a demographic that's despised by a chunk of the population for absolutely no good reason whatsoever.
Some people don't eat meat. This affects you not one jot unless you're a beef farmer. So deal with it and grow the **** up for crissakes.
It’s not about hate or cheap shots. I have nothing against Vegans or Vegetarians. It’s like me saying I’m 70% vegan because I occasionally eat chicken and bits of pig. It just sounds stupid like claiming to be 95% religious, pacifist etc. As per poah, she’s an omnivore. The word is the best one to describe what she is.
Assuming she's referring solely to her diet. She could be attempting to eat wholly vegan but still wears leather shoes.
Unlike being vegetarian, being vegan is often a lifestyle choice as much as a diet.
Indeed. 90% of my meals are vegetarian. I am in no way a vegetarian, just because I only eat meat twice a week.
if you feel the need to point this out rather than just accept someone eats a mostly vegan diet, then you are a ….. ?
why do you feel the need to be over sensitive about people taking the piss out of a stupid comment? Who cares if they are a vegan, veggie or spend their time eating bacon for every meal - at no point in this thread has anyone taken the piss because someone chooses to eat in a certain way.
most of my meals don't include meat but that isn't a conscious decision because I don't like meat.
I'm currently 90% celibate
It’s not about hate or cheap shots.
It's point-scoring. You just want to go "hah, she's wrong, look at the silly not-vegan!" Why do you care what she calls herself?
It's pretty obvious what she means even if she worded it badly, she's almost entirely vegan and as I just said it's actually very difficult to be 100% vegan. When I went veggie it was a gradual process (and I wasn't a huge meat-eater to start with).
There's a world of difference between being vegan but making a concession over say wine or beer which has been clarified with fish-sourced finings, and going "yeah, I'm vegan, apart from eating steak every night." If you're arguing differently then it's just because you want to take the piss out of her, I fail to believe that anyone here would actually be dim enough to genuinely find this confusing.
The irony of course being that if she'd spent more time to explain exactly what she meant using more accurate phrasing, this thread would be entitled "typical whiny bloody vegan on telly going on and on and on about what she eats".
at no point in this thread has anyone taken the piss because someone chooses to eat in a certain way
So what's the point of the thread then?
Who cares if they are a vegan, veggie or spend their time eating bacon for every meal
You for a start, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this thread let alone wasting time posting on it.
The irony of course being that if she’d spent more time to explain exactly what she meant using more accurate phrasing, this thread would be entitled “typical whiny bloody vegan on telly going on and on and on about what she eats”.
She’s not Vegan though and I completely disagree with your point scoring comment. I don’t want to say “Ha, look at the silly vegan” I’m saying “Ha, look at the stupid person” there is a difference and I explained it in my last post. It just makes her sound a bit daft. I’ll gladly admit to taking the piss, but it’s got nothing to do with her being vegan and everything to do with her way of describing it.
I eat very little meat and I’m an omnivore. I wouldn’t describe myself as 85% vegetarian because that’s just silly isn’t it? You seem to be getting very cross about this Cougar. I don’t believe anybody has brought up the because she’s a Vegan argument other than you
If someone said they were 95% tee-total, would we be having this same discussion?
I’d start the discussion because again it’s a stupid thing to say. I rarely drink and that’s how I’d describe it if somebody asked. Using percentages is just odd.
As per poah, she’s an omnivore.
Why are you assuming that the other 5% is "eating meat"? She could be a vegetarian who is almost fully vegan (and I'd hazard a guess that that's exactly what she is).
Poah appears in every vegan thread like a Russian bot.
Cougar it is not hard to be 100 percent vegan. Read the definition as penned by Donald Watson in the 40s. I've been 100 percent vegan since 1992. Yes I've swallowed flies, taken a bite out of something that wasn't vegan, used camera film, bought certain tyre brands, owned a leather saddle before they all became plastic... None of that made me 99 percent vegan. That it's hard is a myth.
The Vegan Society’s formal definition is: "veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose."
Because she was preparing a chicken dinner?
Using percentages is just odd.
It is.
Is it odd enough to start a thread about it though? It registers pretty low on my Stupid-things-someone-said-once-o-meter TBH.
Because she was preparing a chicken dinner?
Was she? That might have been more thread-worthy.
It was odd enough for WCA to make a vaguely amusing joke about it.
I greatly admire all Vegans that I meet. They’ve shown tremendous dedication.
Vega is really, really far away.
It’s just somebody starting a thread about something they found amusing. Nobody brought up vegan bashing until you did. Are you in an argumentative mood today Mr Cougar? 😀
Are you in an argumentative mood today Mr Cougar?
I’m surprised he has the energy 😉
Poah appears in every vegan thread like a Russian bot.
bit like you and cougar getting your pants on fire in every thread to do with diet. This isn't a vegan thread.
Why are you assuming that the other 5% is “eating meat”?
probably the fact she is cooking chicken but don't let that stand in the way of your rant.
It says vegan in the title.
What more does it need to be a vegan thread?
It was obviously vegan enough to trigger your Google alerts
Vegans are ace. You are one or you aren’t one. We should all try and more vegan meals. That won’t make any of us vegan, unless we go all the way.
It says vegan in the title.
What more does it need to be a vegan thread?
It also says "95%" in the title, but it's not a thread on mathematics.
Or perhaps it is.
*sigh* usual pedantry masquerading as intellectual superiority. Is it too much to ask not to take everything so literally? Honestly, that's the kind of dumb shit my 7 year old does.
Fight! Fight! Fight! It’s very much like a playground in here at times. I’d call for a teacher, but one of them is involved 🤣
I don’t think WCA envisioned this when he stated it though
Is it too much to ask not to take everything so literally?
Can we meet you part way and take a percentage literally? How does 76% work for you?
probably the fact she is cooking chicken
And we're supposed to know that how? The OP felt fit to start a thread about something she said whilst completely ignoring something that might actually have been interesting to discuss and you're choosing to hang your hat on, and I'd rather have a root canal than go watch Adrian Chiles.
don’t let that stand in the way of your rant.
Do you actually just not understand just how tedious this is, the constant drip-drip-drip abuse of vegans, either overtly or passive-aggressively? Is like being back at school and mocking gingers, laughing at the fact kid and calling someone with glasses "speccy four-eyes," it's pathetic. People complain about "whiny vegans" but my god they're a drop in an ocean of whiny meat-eaters.
I think the thread was intended as a light hearted joke or dig at the word choice. Then it all went wrong 😕
People complain about “whiny vegans” but my god they’re a drop in an ocean of whiny meat-eaters.
Percentages innit. Roughly 95% fewer Vegans so less exposure to the whiny ones
So, can vegans eat carnivorous plants?
And we’re supposed to know that how?
maybe read the thread properly before going on a rant?
quote from the OP "No, she was preparing a chicken dish at the time. I think that she thinks that chicken meat some how doesn’t count as long as you feel like a vegan when you eat it"
the constant drip-drip-drip abuse of vegans
no one has "abused" vegans in this thread except for below and its kinda warranted given your rants.
whiny meat-eaters
you mean omnivores - maybe if you had a proper diet your brain wouldn't be so fubar'd
How is cooking chicken difficult to avoid?
I know things vegans and really respect their stand point
What I object to is the use of the word vegan as a way of trying to be part of something with out the actual commitment to be part of it
I have seen social media posts of a picture of an apple with "My vegan pudding" written under it. From some one who isn't a vegan. That's another example of dune trying to day in on the word vegan
What the person the OP was talking about meant was that they have chosen to minimise their consumption of animal products. Thats not vegan although it is a good thing
the constant drip-drip-drip abuse of vegans,
Except that no one was abusing vegans. The butt of WCA's joke was very clearly not a vegan.
And if you didn't know that she was cooking chicken that's because you hadn't read the thread properly. I'm not sure whose fault you think that is.
Well said @ampthill. Claiming to be Vegan seems to be pretty hip at the moment and people love a band wagon to jump on. I imagine it slightly annoys people who are actually vegan.
This lady is a fine example of a jumper of musical transportation. Likes being on trend......loves chicken!
Wow, this thread went places I did expect.
My thinking was the curious use of 95% and what bits she measured as she was clearly neither vegan of vegetarian, which, like people with tattoos, I have nothing against.
Maybe if I had gone into a detailed transcript it would have helped. Basically she described herself as 95% vegan but liked chicken or pork occasionally. I can't remember the exact wording but the inference was that she only ate meat occasionally and certainly wasn't following any 'vegan lifestyle'.
The whole comment appeared to be her wanting to associate herself with something she wasn't but thought she liked the idea of it.
Sorry to have offended anyone.
