Hip hip Huw ray.

at last. Presumably he’ll find a home at some point on Absolute 90’s. Though his tastes might be a bit narrow for them.

Will say it again, my problem with the focus on 'new music' is that, well, ALL music is new music if you've never heard it before (much like 'all music is world music').  I'm sure I'll have heard more new artists to me on some of Ezra Furman's guest shows than on the new evening show which can end up with a lot of similar sounding productions sometimes. A long lost session that sounds noticeably different to the single release can be just as interesting as something just released.

Discovered this recently as a case in point

I love Chris Hawkins so hopefully that balances that out.

He's referred to as creepy Chris Hawkins in our house.  I think he's a wrong-un.

...and I'll talk in an incredibly nasal monotonous voice about how I single-handedly discovered some indie band, and play a random selection of middling 90s tracks in honour of him finally leaving...

Between the Radio 2-esqe pop-lite and whiney rap that seems to be gaining airtime recently my 6 Music days may be numbered.

More and more often the radio starts up in the car and I wonder if the kids have re-tuned it to play a joke on me, but nope, it's the playlist 😮

I unlike a few on here, am quite sad Steve Lurpack is cutting back but appreciate things must change and wish him all the best in semi-retirement.

Still not sure about the new music show, like the presenters just wish Riley & Coe were on earlier and there was a bit less "new" in those 2 hours I'm mostly in the kitchen.

I'm happy for Lamacq to be taking a step back on his terms, but the show sounds tired.
The evening changes are nothing short of a disaster as far as I'm concerned; Riley & Coe is a superb 2 hours of music, but it's a poor replacement for the 5 hours of top-notch broadcasting we had before.
The New Music Fix is a good concept, with great presenters, but just at the wrong time. I feel it should have replaced Tom Robinson's show on a Sunday, which would make it more concise. Combine it with Sounds episodes that could be played in the middle of the night as well, and it could work.
The hour long artist playlist nonsense between 21:00-22:00 is just a huge mistake. Just give the extra hour to Riley & Coe for more live sets, and be done with the obvious advertising slot for the band/artist. Plus, I'm usually doing the washing-up then, and my hands are wet so I don't want to fiddle with Spotify on the phone.

Agree completely with this. I think the artist is residence crap was on at midnight before which is where it belongs i.e. when it's time for bed. An extra hour of Riley & Coe would be a much better use of airtime.

I agree on the A.I.R. slot being a waste of air time in that slot. It's interesting for sure but it's a time that needs consistency and the A.I.R. bit is more of a filler/listen again type thing.

I was interested to hear that Saturday nights have been moved around, with Don Letts taking the slot after Craig Charles - what used to be the Blessed Madonna. I always thought his show was a great mix of stuff, and really not given the space it deserved when it was late on a Sunday.

I think he's one of those that keep telling everyone a nickname that he wants to be called in the hope that everyone will eventually start calling him it.

Personally, I've never heard anyone refer to him as the Rebel Dread except himself 🤔😂

Don letts should be on that good person list. Underrated as a presenter/persona.

Plays some good tunes from all walks of life too

Have met him, and can confirm he's a lovely chap. He also played a bowel-wobbling dub set just before that was a thing of wonder.

6music still places too much emphasis on the whole wind-down, lifestyle thing.

Sundays are as placid as a monumental festival jakey/ druggie come-down, and as counter-cultural as a weekend  in the Hebrides.

Between 12-2pm, 6music should be playing some music that would at least, appeal to the yoots in the skateparks of the UK…skatepunk, thrash, surf, extreme metal.

Gid Coe will have access to the late John Peels music. There will be loads of sampler cds from the now defunct ‘Terrorizer’ magazine. That’s a fascinating place to start.

On an ethnographic level, 6music owes us a deeper delve into the musical subcultures.

The time for hegemony is OVER. Surely that’s something we can all agree on😉😉😉

Just had a look to see if the children are still whining about the same tired old subjects, like Lamaq always playing Elastica, and I’m not disappointed. As I proved conclusively a couple of months or so ago that that claim is bogus and clearly made by people who only listen once in a while, by checking Lamaq’s playlist over two months and saw he played Elastica exactly twice.

I'm not sure I'd admit to that

I used to really like Don Letts. Then I went to the cinema to see the remastered Ziggy and they showed the panel discussion beforehand, during which Letts and Suggs showed themselves to be utter cockwombles, albeit not as bad as Richard E Grant.  I wasn't particularly surprised about Suggs, and his appalling music hall cheeky chappie Radio 4 slots have confirmed his status, but I was disappointed in Letts. I'm just trying to forget I saw it and enjoy the stuff he plays.

Yey! for Riley & Coe switching to 9-11. That's great news.  I can't figure if it's because they've got bored of the guest artiste slot or bored of the moaning from listeners.

Either way I'm glad they've done something quickly.  I can listen to more of the R&C show while washing up.

Opened the thread to see if it was an angry rant about how crap Bill Nighy was on Iggy Pop's show.
JeeezusH ,if he wants to 'do radio' they need to have him catapulted into some dull, old duffer's slot on R2.

Great news about Riley and Coe moving forward to 9!

Most of my 6music listening these days involves putting the radio on, turning it off, and putting the latest Riley and Coe on BBC Sounds on my tablet.

Great news about Riley & co. I'm impressed how theyve sorted the issue out so quickly. Well done 6

I've been listening less and less but then caught radcliffe & maconie wicker man special with Katie J Pearson playing live and it was great 👍

I turned Bill Nighy on at the weekend.  He was playing some godawful country & western.  Turned out it was Taylor Swift! Never knew she sounded like that??

So that was promptly switched off again...

Re The Bill Nye, Iggy stand-in; he does have a very different taste in music and not one I would have expected.  Isn't 6 Music all about hearing stuff you wouldn't normally? I didn't "like" it but it wasn't objectionable on the whole.  MAH played some Slipknot when I was WFH yesterday and that was *in g **** but I'm happy it exists. I can close my ears for 3 minutes or turn off the radio for 2 hrs.

You can't get rid of Chris Hawkins anyway as that would mean an end to Names in Songs which is the best thing ever.

I gave this a listen:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001t0ln?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

Do any of them have a pulse?

It’s like we’re all waiting for Elvis 2.0 to add some metaphorical sp5nk and kick out some jams.

I can’t help but wonder if the suicide rate amongst British males can, to some extent, be blamed on the relentlessly insipid playlist, promulgated by 6music. (Probably more to do with underage drinking).

Like most things vanilla, it’s difficult to object to their music. But in the past two decades, I’ve barely heard anything on 6music thats inspired me to pick up any musical instrument.

Something had to change, I wish they could have been braver in attempting to carve out a new section of the audience. It does all feel like a little bit of a compromise. I’m hopeful that the next round of changes help to make sense of everything.

I don't get you lot, music evolves, tastes change. Classics are classics and new stuff is introduced all the time.  I like 6M because it doesn't feature formulaic cr@p or heavily vocodered sh** and mixes the best of new artists with a decent dose of old stuff and is an incredibly broad church.

What would you like to hear on 6M? Is anyone making it? Would it make a decent 24hr radio station?

I really, really, really miss Shaun K.

Decent music and intelligent humour.

And a nice interesting fella to boot.

Why did they replace him with the tedious Charles????
