As an aside I agree that thought is more important than cost.
I once spent a Christmas with my friend's family in Australia.
Rather than the pile of presents that we all get , they gave each other just one thoughtful present each.
Even though I'd known one of the girls only a couple of days I could see that the framed picture of a 60s scooter in Italy was the most perfect present she could have received.

I tend to buy most of the things I want (at reasonable present-price-point levels), so buying presents is tricky

What I really like are memories, those things are valuable. So tickets to go and do things, trips, experiences, those are all awesome. It also means I get a pass to go and do it!

Doing it with him would be even better. Is there anything cool that you both like, or might both like to do? Sedate or exhilarating, fun or serious - they're all good, and can be pretty special

The reason he is so well to do is that he works almost constantly and is very rarely in this country.
We were going to do new years in a brilliant cottage in cornwall but he's got to be somewhere else.
Likewise arranging a meal, you just don't know if he will be around.
He is having a pool built and also a cinema room. So other ideas are framed poster of his favourite film and a solar powered sun umbrella that goes up and down at the push of a button.
The brolly is excellent , £300 but looks like you've just been to the garden centre.

I have given an original 'Motorsport' magazine dated the month of birth, so in ops case 50 years old! Not necessarily relevant to the persons driving history (i.e. usually from age 17) but interesting from motor point of view, at least imho.

For alot less than £300 you should be able to get 50 bottles of decent beer , with a label with his face in charactuer (sp) .
Ok, so you may have to label them youself, but thats less than an hour .

Just had my 50th and took 50 close friends and family up and down the Thames on a steam boat with a jazz band on a lovely sunny afternoon. It was not a cheap day out#, but our family had a shit year last year and I really wanted to give people some fabulous memories. I didn't care if anyone gave me a present or not. Perhaps your friend is the same.

Something personal like a nice framed photo or picture as a gesture of your friendship would always be appreciated.
