As an aside I agree that thought is more important than cost.
I once spent a Christmas with my friend's family in Australia.
Rather than the pile of presents that we all get , they gave each other just one thoughtful present each.
Even though I'd known one of the girls only a couple of days I could see that the framed picture of a 60s scooter in Italy was the most perfect present she could have received.
Steve, you share a bed with your brother?...
Maybe a WBA season ticket and put the remaining £200 in a card for half time pies 🙂
I tend to buy most of the things I want (at reasonable present-price-point levels), so buying presents is tricky
What I really like are memories, those things are valuable. So tickets to go and do things, trips, experiences, those are all awesome. It also means I get a pass to go and do it!
Doing it with him would be even better. Is there anything cool that you both like, or might both like to do? Sedate or exhilarating, fun or serious - they're all good, and can be pretty special
Buy him a tropical fish that requires being fed a very specific type of food once an hour, and the last time you fed the fish was 45 minutes ago.
And the pet store closes in 15 minutes.
I can't afford rich friends.
baby robin?
Steve, you share a bed with your brother?...
Not since we were something like 4 and 6 and he had nightmares...
The reason he is so well to do is that he works almost constantly and is very rarely in this country.
We were going to do new years in a brilliant cottage in cornwall but he's got to be somewhere else.
Likewise arranging a meal, you just don't know if he will be around.
He is having a pool built and also a cinema room. So other ideas are framed poster of his favourite film and a solar powered sun umbrella that goes up and down at the push of a button.
The brolly is excellent , £300 but looks like you've just been to the garden centre.
Football shirt is still winning , will check to see he doesn't already have one!
Could be my brother except for the football... and he already has a pool and cinema room....
Football shirt sounds good in that even if he already has a WBA signed shirt the chance of it being the same signatures is pretty remote.... and two framed either side of something ????
I have given an original 'Motorsport' magazine dated the month of birth, so in ops case 50 years old! Not necessarily relevant to the persons driving history (i.e. usually from age 17) but interesting from motor point of view, at least imho.
Zippy, what date month and year and I'll see if I have an old copy spare, if that appeals?

having a pool built? who wouldn't want a radio controlled submarine - especially if you could find a cool U-boat
I got my dad a 'birth year' razor. If he's remotely interested in shaving, something like a 1967 Gillette Aristocrat would be great. 1967 was the last year of production. Gillette history
Here's an example for sale: Gillette Aristocrat
But, being super busy, he may not have time for proper wet shaving.

Or
A bag that's had cake in it.

FTFY
Still reckon the non-monetary suggestions are best
a top end escort ,ask rooney, and coke of course.
How about a shed load of bespoke labelled custom bottles of beer?
For alot less than £300 you should be able to get 50 bottles of decent beer , with a label with his face in charactuer (sp) .
Ok, so you may have to label them youself, but thats less than an hour .
You could go crazy and number them 1 - 50 as well
Just a thought
Or a powerkite and a charity donation
Just had my 50th and took 50 close friends and family up and down the Thames on a steam boat with a jazz band on a lovely sunny afternoon. It was not a cheap day out#, but our family had a shit year last year and I really wanted to give people some fabulous memories. I didn't care if anyone gave me a present or not. Perhaps your friend is the same.
Something personal like a nice framed photo or picture as a gesture of your friendship would always be appreciated.
#could have bought a very nice bike indeed.
1967 Armagnac - keeps much better than say Port which at 50 years will probably be vinegar. Berry Brothers Rudd stock all vintages.
Hmmm, day volunteering at a food bank?
I've just got the below for my birthday.

Something with thought behind it will no doubt be the best. I'd just go with something daft, like the above, or an offensive mug.

If he's rich and likes alcohol, he'll already have had seriously expensive bottles etc..
I can't afford rich friends.
Me neither, not that I buy any of my friends birthday presents, but whenever I/we come up with an idea for some minor adventure or even a day out, they always want to push the budget by going for the more expensive option.
