I don't eat particularly well. Not masses of fatty food, but just not a lot of the right sorts of food.
Today I ate 3 satsumas and was quite proud of myself until I found out this doesn't equal 3 of my 5 for the following reasons:
1 - they're too small and only count as 'half-fruits'
2 - you can't eat all the same type of fruit.
So I've managed <1.5 of my 5-a-day, which is still my best score so far (I don't think the veg in my Sunday roast counts more than, say, 1)
How many of you routinely manage 5-a-day? Do you go out of your way to hit the total or is it something you do anyway?
Probably closer to 8 or 9 to be honest - don't deliberately 'count' to make sure I do, but after breakfast, morning snack and lunch I'm usually at 5 or so already.
I have a bowl of fruit salad every morning for breakfast.
Its a fair size and has at least 5 types of different fruit in it.
There is no science behind the "5 a day" recommendation. The number was arrived at purely arbitrarily.
cider is made of apples
I do it anyway. Best way so you don't have to count is to include some fruit or salad with every meal you have. I put at least two types of fresh fruit in my porridge I snack on nuts and fruit, I have salad for launch and my main meal is accompanied with some sort of salad.
Also it is at the absolute least 5-a-day. It is not like 5-a-day is fine.
BTW I am not trying to be pedantic or say I am perfect I can eat a lot of rubbish too.
I'm not a cider fan. Do chocolate covered raisins count?
Sure I read somewhere that it really should be 7-a-day but they didn't think anyone would eat that much so changed it to 5......
well raisins are grapes and wine is made of grapes and is very good for you
Do crisps count?
crisps don't count, but toffee apples and chocolate oranges do.
or chips? 5 portions a day might be a toughie.

Different types of fruit and vegetables contain different combinations of fibre, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Eating a variety of fruit and vegetables will ensure that you get a good mix.A good rule of thumb is to eat fruit and vegetables of different colours. Often the chemicals that are responsible for the colours are the same ones that are good for health.
I was going to write all that but sounded like an repetitive 5 year old.
Still, I reckon I get mine, not hard being a Vegetabletarian.
So I've managed <1.5 of my 5-a-day, which is still my best score so far
whereabouts in Glasgow are you? 😀
Terrys Chocolate orange x 5.
Wow, I look better and feel fitter already.
I've had 5 and I'm only halfway through the day.
Slightly negated by washing them down with 5 buckets of strong black coffee mind ...
I have none and then take a one-a-day multi vitamin, thats better right????
does steak count?
pickled onion crisps are 2: crisps are made of potato which is a vegetable. And onion is also a vegetable.
More seriously though: why is 2 portions of the same veg/fruit not as good as 2 portions of different veg/fruit
Just had a look here..

I reckon I do 3 or 4 a day without really thinking about it.
It's really supposed to be mostly vegetables too.
Chips and beans twice with extra chips please.. Jobs a goodun
WordClass that 7. Beans are in tomato sauce!
tinned baked beans count as part of 5 a day (according to the label)
does steak count?
It's processed grass and quite a lot of it at that, so I don't see why not
And come to think of it rice, sugar beet and cocoa plants are all vegetables.
So a toffee crisp= at least 3 out of 5.
There are lots of things that count.
Baked beans (as above), a glass of pure fruit juice, nuts and raisins, other stuff which I can't rememeber now.
I have at least 5 portions of chocolate a day.
