My daughter has asked for one for crimbo but I'm reluctant to get one as I've heard rumours from within the video game trade that the console will be updated soon to add a new control system and improve battery life.
She's already got a DS lite but the top screen is going and its generally seen better days. I would probably get a DSi but they are the same price as the 3DS.
Is the 3DS any good, and does it play old DS games OK?

AFAICR the 3DS plays regular DS games, but there's a setting you should change. The screen resolution is slightly different, and it stretches by default so it looks crap.
Supposed to be on sale at Sainsburys in a couple of weeks at £119 according to hotukdeals
