Taking the family on a canoe trip and just wondering which bit would be the best for us to do. Done a bit of this type of thing before, so would favour interesting over easy.
The canoe company said to do Hoarwithy, past Ross on Wye, to Symonds Yat, which is not a part that I know well. I know the valley from Symonds Yat, south to Chepstow, but not for canoeing, but thought it might have been better. Any advice or recommendations?
Thanks.
Did that trip for my stay do a few years ago. Only took just over a day and a half at a very steady pace.
Camped overnight in Ross.
Was very pleasant but not 3 days worth.
I think there are wigwams/teepees you can hire between Hoar and Ross iirc
I did that a few years ago. Overnight at Ros.
If I did it again I wouldn't take a bloody great big dog with me. Like having a 7 stone cannonball rolling around.
For my money the river is a bit more "interesting" further up. The river is much more windy so more corners to navigate. It's also a bit more peaceful and scenic IMHO.
I've kayaked and canoed the river multiple times, Glasbury all the way to Chepstow, including non stop on one occasion. I've mailed you a couple of things which might help your planning. A list of campsites, albeit a few years old and a list of distances between various put in/out point and landmarks to help you plan. Hope you find it useful!
Hoarwithy to Symonds Yat is very pleasant, and about as easy as river canoeing gets. But it's not 3 days worth.
mostly, it's slow river paddling, with lovely views, etc. but not much in the way of technical interest, save for a few seconds worth at Symonds Yat itself.
Brilliant, thanks everyone. Think we'll just try and get a bit further on then. Thanks for the comprehensive list of places etc eatsleepbike.
