Saw Black Panther at a preview. Awesome film for many different reasons. Go see it.

Black Panther is ok and certainly worth a watch, but it's not great, there are better Marvel movies.
Saw black panther last night, excellent movie. One of the best marvel flicks so far.
Really? I agree with Dragon, it was okay as in the acting, characters, effects but the plot was quite rubbish I thought, worth a watch though.
SPOILERS: considering you know from the next Avengers movie trailer that T'Challa/black panther /the king doesn't die, and Infinity Wars will take place in Wakanda I thought they could have done more TBH with the plot. Let the Wakanda spies start attacking the world with their weapons or something just less predictable than what happened.
I also found two things really annoying, one Killmonger/son of uncle who challenged for the throne, took Klaue from Black Panther before delivering him dead, why not mention this when he rocked up. Then when the border tribe leader turned, why not mention the reason his parents were dead was down to the Uncle selling secrets to Klaue!
Also quite disappointed with the cut scenes too, they gave nothing extra then you already know from the trailers for the next movie!
I saw Black Panther last night and it was decidedly meh. Stunning visuals as usual but the story just didn’t draw me in. Despite what the critics are saying, not even close to being the best Marvel movie by a long shot, probably not even top 10 for me. 4/10.
Lady Bird is very good - Saoirse Ronan is excellent in it, but to be fair, the supporting cast, especially her mum and dad are all great too.
I though Black Panther was enjoyable, familiar storyline & some obvious plot devices shoehorned in, with the twist of it being african centric + with some strong uncompromising female leads, the only 2 white guys in the film being sidekicks, which shouldnt be a big thing in 2018, but it actually is for a comic-based hollywood blockbuster!
Also helped by a decent supporting cast, including a bad guy that wasnt CGI ! Some good social commentary without being preachy. story let it down a bit.
I saw Early Man with the kids on Friday, historical innacuracies aside it was good fun

Went to see The Greatest Showman last night!! big camp musical extravaganza! a total shonky cheese fest but i absolutely loved it. proper film!!
When you walk out the cinema with a big grin on your face and realise its still there when you get home you know its a good un!
To think my favourite movies of recent times were things like Tyrannosaur & Dead Mans Shoes, i have reached an age where this is what i want from a film... foot tapping joy! and any father with 2 girls story is gonna tug at the heart strings too.
Saw The Shape Of Water today. Bit of a del Toro fan anyway but loved it. It's probably the most del Toro-like film he's made (if that makes sense?). A visually stunning, charming, dark, funny, magic realist fairy tale. Some great performances - would love to see a film like this (ie - not standard awards fare) get some Oscars recognition. Only real criticism is that the ending is obvious and flagged up in almost the first scene of the film, but in the context of the film's style and intent it's pretty much a meaningless criticism anyway.
VERY much makes up for Pacific Rim.
Seeing this thread pop back up, disappointed to find that Annihilation got pulled from UK theatrical release - Netflix instead.
I saw Black Panther on Friday: I enjoyed it but I didn't think it was a good as people are saying. The "James Bond" Q segment was just cringe worthy: I'm sure the makers will say it was intended to be humourous, or an "ode" to Bond, but it really spoiled it, for me.
I also thought the segment where it relocated to the US was where it deteriorated into generic, non-sensical car chases. That bit was also too "Bond", with the Casino scene completely ripping off Skyfall.
Overall, I'd say it was a 3.5, possibly a 4/5
As an aside I caught the 2017 Snowman (from the Jo Nesbo book) film which had had atrocious reviews.
I couldn't believe how bad it was - something must've gone wrong in the production. 3 times Oscar winner and Scorsese collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker couldn't salvage it. Looks like they rushed the shooting to me.
There are flashbacks, subplots and characters that just seem to get written in and out. Val Kilmer appears to have gone off the boil too - some dodgy dubbing and plastic surgery. An odd subplot involving the Oslo bid for Winter Olympics for no logical reason at all. A random half-baked sex scene that pops up at the worst of moments. Red Herrings that make no sense. The list goes on.
Scorsese was down to direct it - I'm pretty sure he'd have made it work, though his name is still attached to it the poor man.
The cinematography is excellent though and one or two scenes did have some suspense. But what a mess. A proper so bad it's bad.
GF loves the book.

I was initially worried about that, the last Cloverfield was a turd that got sold to Netflix on the cheap - the 'straight to DVD' for the new era - BUT, Annihilation might be different - it's supposed to "too intellectual and too complicated" so Paramount wanted changes to make it more mainstream - the producers refused and had final cut, so Paramount dumped it to Netflix. So it could actually be a better film for it - but then I wouldn't put it past Paramount to invent the whole thing to sell a turkey. You can't trust pre-release reviews any more anyway - Ghost Busters got good pre-release reviews, as did The Last Jedi, glowing ones actually, but it's scores have dived since release.
Anyway, it's out in 2 weeks on Netflix.

I really enjoyed Black Panther. Would like to get to the cinema more frequently this year. If I can avoid buying Coke & popcorn then it's only £3.99 on a Monday at Vue and that's my day off so no excuses really.
New series of Film 2018 starts tonight. No Bazza Norman, so not saying it'll be any good, but it's on.

Anyone wanting to give their thoughts on Ready Player One then? All I can say is that most of my fears were realised, good soundtrack though
I seen it yesterday. It wa what I expected a family film so the story was very easy, straight forward to follow with a bit of humour. Visually it was stunning, absolutely a visual overload, I lost count of reference to films, TV and games. Soundtrack as you say sound a great soundtrack. I enjoyed it but I was expecting a family film not anything complex.
Ready Player One is a film to watch rather than a film to think about. Great references to all sorts of things, I'm sure the DVD will have a bonus edition where someone talks through every scene with all the references they've got going on in there. Totally unchallenging and has gaping plot holes but why worry about them when you can just let it wash over you. (FWIW I'm not familiar with the book so had zero expectations in that regard)

Thats probably my downfall of course, read the book before I knew there was going to be a movie - wish it had been the other way around. It was fine to watch (3D IMAX didn’t hurt) and generally good fun. I do feel there was a few wee touches that could’ve improved things - even the way “Ready Player One” appears on screen at the start. There are also many bits that would’ve been rubbish in a movie (basically all the challenges) so understand that it had to be ripped up

I read the the book first too, and was waiting for bits to happen that didn't, but some of the replacement scenes were better IMO.
Thought Simon Peggs part was a bit underplayed though, as that character is quite pivotal in the book.
Best bit for me were the sets (mainly because I built most of it 😜)
Will probably take my boy too see Ready Player One, expecting the worse myself.. Al Murray liked it on Film '18 so it might be bearable!
Saw Unsane, the Steven Soderbergh film, last week. Was pretty good, started as a terrific psychological thriller and went a bit straight horror-ish towards the end, but still very good. Mainly cos of Claire Foy - she was brilliant - I had to look up afterwards if she was English, as her American accent is the best I've heard on film from a Brit. It was like she became American, rather than just put on an accent.

Went to see A Quiet Place yesterday. Unusual post-apocalyptic thriller, where making any loud noise will kill you. Has replaced 3 Billboards as film of the year so far.
Also looking forward to seeing A Quiet Place - sounds very good listening/reading reviews so far.
Saw Ready Player One - pure indulgence for Spielberg that. So nerdy, aimed at gamers only I think. Hey, it's 2045 or whatever and the nostalgia for the 80s is worse than it is now! Sod that for a future! Didn't hate every minute of it, the character with Deadpool's barman's voice was funny.
Watched 'Detroit' on a flight the other day. Hell fire that is some depressing shit... very good like, but ill be watching Greatest Showman again on the way home!!
Also watched 'Molly's Game' which was pretty good too.

A Quiet Place - one part Shyamalan (the good ones), one part Hitchcock and one part Spielberg.
Not has a mainstream film played with an audience's expectations of cinema for as long as I can remember. All I want to say is - minimal dialogue and maximum visual story-telling are fused to produce a high concept narrative that doesn't forget character and nuance, at least in the early stages.
You will need a rock-solid audience for this but it cleverly draws you in with some neat tricks.
Sure there are contrivances and familiarity but they are staged with such edge of the frame glee that you can't help to get lost in the suspense, and forgive its occasional low budget by the numbers scares. Emily Blunt does a lot with a role that doesn't offer much in the way of dialogue.
Very much this years' Get Out for me, if not quite as multi-layered.
I feared the worst with our audience but the film seemed to shut them up pretty much instantly. Quite staggering.

I saw it in a full screen in the Leicester Square Cineworld and, fortunately, the munching was mercifully quiet. There were people walking out with virtually full bags of popcorn 😀

Saw Ready Player One last week - doesn't follow the book but none the worse for it (and I was a big fan). Want to watch it again, in 3D and watch the background. Good updating to capture current zeitgeist (Tracer!!)

Watched " you were never really here" with Joachim Phoenix in and its was pretty good. Absolutely brutal and pretty bleak but one of the better films seen this year.

Funny, after I mentioned how good Claire Foy's American acting was in Unsane, to have watched Ready Player One with so many Brits putting on shit American accents! What's up with having US actors in a US film ffs??
Watched 'a quiet place' because of this thread. Very enjoyable movie to watch, but serious plot holes and questions. Kept me watching to the end and didn't seem to be long and that in my books is good enough.
Was really disappointed with 'A quiet place' . It's massively over hyped for an unoriginal alien invasion movie. Plot holes galore and frankly large parts of it are plain slow/dull. Sicario 2 looks a corker though !
