Favourite thing is either buggered or just shit it doesn't work well at all. Quicker just to swap as action stops anyway.
Faves is crap Mollie, I asked same question earlier. Hopefully a patch will sort it out. Waiting for girlfriend to go to bed so I can play it.
No idea how to equip weapons without going through the whole menu system
When in the items menu, select something to favourite. Then in the favourites menu you can hotkey them. Thats for PC don't know how it works for console.
unfortunately (on 360 anyways) you can only hotkey items with up/down d pad buttons) and you can only have on thing in each hand (either a weapon/spell or shield).it has taken me some time to get my head around it (as i come from the oblivion school of elder scrolls).it does get better though once you have played for a while 🙂
Right, thanks folks. There's meant to be a way of setting your two most favourite things to left and right d-pad but the instruction manual is completely vague about it and experimenting has revealed some really bizarre behaviour.
Loving Skim. Ranger class build and the slow mo when booming with a bow is awesome.horses are way better too than oblivionThat would be Skyrim and zooming
Add the item to favourites, press q to open favourites then highlight the item and press 1, 2, 3 etc
Archery is great whilst hidden 🙂 I spend most time in auto run sneak ha ha
Oh and attacking some mobs from behind allows you to cut their throat in slow motion - nice :-0
PB I have no such buttons.. this is PS3...
can i jump in please....
you seems all hard core people so be gentle...
Assasins creed annoyed me as i didnt have the patience (at the time)... i reeeeeeeeeeeally want to get an RPG type game but im guessing Skyrim is similar'ish to AC?
think ive answered my own question there!?
Skyrim is totally different to assassins creed. Assassins creed is more linear whereas skyrim you can literally do anything you want. It is a more hardcore rpg game.
My 12y.o son has expressed an interest in this and would like it for Christmas for his PS3. He has not played any of the Oblivion type games before and his main enjoyment is Cod. I think he has seen the ads on tele for it and thinks it looks good – but not sure if he has the right patience for a game like this.
Not being much of a gamer myself (I was playing proper D&D when a student and computer games were fighting mugwumps in text format).
So is this a good starting place? Is it good for short attention spans and is there a cheaper alternative for the complete newbie?
Skyrim carries an 18 certificate, does it not?
Age rating aside I'm not sure an open-world RPG like Skyrim is a good introduction to the genre. Although linear games (where you go through quests in a fairly rigid order and open up new game areas as you go along) can be frustrating they're also easier to get into IMO. With something like Skyrim you're kind of dumped in the middle of a new world with a couple of vague main quest lines you're aware of from the introductory stuff but what you do and where you go is largely up to you. Whilst the freedom is refreshing you can end up feeling a bit lost and unsure what quests are worth pursuing (depending on your personal goals) and what you can skip etc.

I think it's 15 in the UK, 18 in the rest of Europe.
EDIT: No, I tell a lie, it's 18 BBFC rated too.
Not entirely sure why it's 18 to be honest - at least so far. It's got gushing blood when you fight, but that's about it. Which is fairly pointless and unneccessary.
Skyrim is a BBFC 15 not 18. It's due to the beheading which means it's not allowed a standard PEGI rating. So no it's not suitable for a 12 year old.
It has some mild gore, a couple of mild swear words and people have their heads cut off and throats cut. It's up to you if you think this too much for your kid. My kids have seen me playing they're 5 and 8 they know fine well it's a game not real.

Pffft, when I were a 12 year old lass, I was merrily decapitating people in Moonstone on the Amiga. Kids today, bloody mollycoddled, the lot of them!
I should clarify,
I wasn't saying "ZOMG you can't buy it, he's too young," that's up to you. I was merely pointing it out as something you might want to take into account.
IIRC the Call of Duty series are all PEGI 18 too, so if you're happy with him playing those... <shrug>

Heh, just joshing. I'm glad when people ask about game suitability and content for their kids so that they can make an informed choice, rather than buying little Timmy the latest GTA game then going all Daily Mail when they realise it's all about car theft, drug running and prozzies.
I used to work in Game when I was at uni, and some parents thought the age rating was a mark of difficulty. I also remember one 8-year old lad (who was actually called Tim) who gave me a death stare because I informed his mother of the nature of GTA Vice City. He'd told her it was a racing game...

And Barbarian too, then there was Mortal Kombat.

There's a subtle difference, I think, between craftily playing games that might not be wholly suitable, and having your parents buy them for you. The latter makes it 'acceptable.' I don't see as it's a problem that a young teen plays violent computer games (hell, I played enough of them), more that perhaps a parent should be setting examples.
Not that I'm a parent or in any way qualified to comment, of course.

Easy to think something is suitable for kids because "it's a game" or "it's a cartoon."
My character in Skyrim. Watch in HD! My settings are on Ultra.
agree with Mrs Toast, the only thing I've ever stopped little brov doing is some of the GTA levels and the airport on MW.
Level 17 - had a day off work caugh I'm ill you see caugh
Ha ha PB. Spent all day yesterday playing, man was coming at 10 am to fix the washer, didn't show up till 4:30! No really...
Would like to get this but can't see me playing it for than a week or so. Fall Out 3, Mass Effect 2 and Witcher 2 each grabbed me for about that long before turning into the same old same old.
Sure SR looks super lovely, but isn't that just glossing over yet another RPG full of incredibly dull NPCs, rinse-n-repeat side quests and an inventory list that forever requires tinkering with?
Level 16 at the moment, using 1 hand a shield which is quite fun. Spent yesterday evening making a full set of dwarven armour and mace, look cool as now!
Trying not to do the main story line too much, so just wandering round finding stuff and killing the dragons as they come. Got my arse handed to me after killing one dragon, some lich guy popped out of a coffin on top of a moubntian and nommed me.
Good fun though, until a giant kills your horse!
Yeah, my horse got killed at the start of Oblivion too, which annoyed me a bit. 😀
I've only just started on Skyrim, but have Friday off so am going to spend all day on it... 8)
Loved Fallout too, there's just something about the atmosphere in these games that is great.
My friend was on about the lich that comes out after you kill a dragon, I've not seen it yet. My characters an expert archer and alchemist, I like using poisoned arrows from afar. Enchanted all my armour and rings to suit that style of play.
GlitterGary, I think Fallout 3 has to be one of the most atmospheric games ever made. New Vegas was good too and took it to the next level, but i think I will remember 3 more for atmosphere as it was the first free roaming game of that genre done so well. STALKER was ok but it often felt more like operation flashpoint set in a wasteland with crap monsters.
Got distracted killing a dragon before then turned back to the screen to see me in it's mouth being flung around.
Happened a few times to me tonight, seems random if you get chomped, as i was at 3/4 health but still got eaten!

Have you not got any shouts then? You need to do the main story line, I got distracted too but back on it now. The shouts are awesome I have one that knocks people flying.
I finally managed to get some time with Skyrim tonight. I'm currently full destruction (fire in the right hand, sparks in the left), and nauseatingly good. Unlike Mr Toast, who spends hours robbing people blind with his lizard wizard. Well, he's not really a wizard, but 'stealthy roguey archer type' doesn't rhyme with lizard.
Got some shouts Drac, not seen a lich though. I presume it's part of the main quest? I'm just in a dwarf cave, once I'm done on this quest I'm going to do more of the main quest.
I'm having too much fun playing Skyrim.
How do you go about adding more letters to your shouts though? I've been with the greybeards and improved my pushing-people type one but really want my firey shout to be better.
Also, as a bunch of left-leaning Guradian readers, are we all Stormcloaks or has anyone sided with the Empire?
Anyone been checking out the latest PC mods?
Worth using the Mod Manager and already seeing improvements in textures etc.
I'm struggling to care about it any more and am only lvl 14 :p I can't get over how weak a destruction mage seems to be, unless I resort to healing my companion (or tanking and chain healing myself whilst the companion does damage) I really struggle. Occasionally I'll 1-shot a bandit or some other weak thing but usually in dungeons I do about 10-15% dmg per hit and die if I get hit more than a couple of times.
It's a bit naff you can seemingly buy all the spells from the start to so as a mage only have armour to look forward to (assuming no one bothers much with staves).
The rag-doll stuff is annoying to if you're fighting on a mountain, I must have run miles chasing corpses rolling down them.
Not in a mean way, but how do you guys do anything productive when you like games like this?
I get well addicted to games like battlefield so I physically have to limit myself from going on them more than a few hours a week... surely these games are life stealers if your into them no?
Yes, they are life stealers. Thankfully I'm full on with everything else in my life right now so only get to play the odd session late at night. Twas different in my 20s.
FW, I'll probably get bored of it in a few days/weeks too. I'm kind of expecting to, but at the same time the non-linearity does mean you have huge variety in what you do and how you do it. Everyone playing the game is probably taking an entirely different path. And it does look damn fine. A much better experience that the Fallout series and other RPGs.
Not a gamer, but I did enjoy reading this after a mate posted it on fb.
Probably even better if you're "in" skyrim:

someone might have posted already, I didn't check through.
Also, as a bunch of left-leaning Guradian readers, are we all Stormcloaks or has anyone sided with the Empire?
I sided with the Imperials, but kind of by accident as there were people talking in the room and I just picked the first option without realising what I was being asked. 😛
Loved the Cracked article! 😀
right.. been following this, and in other places....
Have no idea what I should play it on.. PS3 or XBOX, not a PC, as I only use a laptop at home.
