I wonder how many of these killed are deliveroo / just eat delivery bikers? Been a big increase in them on the roads and boy are they generally awful cyclistsalso loads of folk wobbling about on the just eat share bike scheme bikes around edinburgh – again no road sense at all
Stop being a victim blaming ****, TJ. You've been doing it higher up the thread. You'd normally be the first to rubbish this sort of bullshit. Cyclists aren't the source of the danger, even if they're irritating you more now there are fewer cars on the roads.
They obviously could've benefited from some training off Mr.Perfect Cyclist the Safety Expert. 😀
It’s astounding that those that normally, quite rightly, abhor victim blaming are turning round on page 2 onwards here saying “oh well, lots of wobbly cyclists”. So what? Does that make it impossible not to literally kill them? I like driving like a nob end far more than the next man, but I’ll slow down to make sure my nobbishness isn’t going to harm walkers and cyclists.

On the three occasions during lockdown I've had cyclists riding on the wrong side of the road I would generally struggled to avoid them if I'd been in a car: Turning on a 90 degree bend to find someone riding at speed on my side: Or a bloke on a bike shaped object getting into the wrong gear on a hill and veering at 45 degrees onto the wrong side of the road. I'm a cyclist, not a driver, by a ratio of over 10 miles to 1. I wouldn't have blamed a car driver on either of those instances if there had been a collision.

OK, and yet I've seen a significant minority doing ~60 in 30 areas, someone bleating on Facebook about being a "key worker" so why are the police enforcing speed limits etc. Normally I'm the first to disagree with speed cameras etc, but now that the limitations of normal levels of traffic have gone, some people are driving in a massively irresponsible manner.
Someone shifting into the wrong gear and veering across the road is one of the many reasons the highway code states to give cyclists plenty of room. If you're going at a responsible speed and giving a responsible amount of distance, you aren't going to hit, let alone kill, that guy. Fair enough going at speed the wrong side of a 90 degree corner there might be nothing to be done as they ride into your bonnet, but you can go at an appropriate speed to pose minimal risk and if it's a blind 90 degree bend that's pretty slow. Slow enough that even a "fast" cyclist is unlikely to die. Your point about people having a wobble doesn't absolve motorists of blame. Imagine if we were talking about ebikes on a shared use path, the lynch mob would be straight after you!
I also can't help noticing that in the two collisions I've read about on this thread, the driver did not stop. Yes there are many collisions that must have occurred, but that's 2 that are almost certainly not the cyclist's fault.
The roads during the first couple of weeks of lock down were a positive joy to cycle on, but now they are definitely getting busier. If you can get up early, there is very little traffic 7-9am, but after that every bugger seems to be out making "essential journeys".
The police set up a speed trap at the bottom of our lane yesterday. Obviously someone ( or many) has/have complained about the nobbers using it as a test track. Unfortunately they didn't catch the di@k in his clapped out silver MX5 who has been filmed doing over 60 on our 20mph lane. This particular chav, going by local social media, is not far off from been lynched. Strange times indeed.
I walked to the local supermarket earlier and the 30mph residential road up through the village had a couple of people doing 50+ up it.
Wet roads, single carriageway, houses on one or both sides most of the way up it.
It's definitely getting worse. Funny how no-one seems to be writing Go Home Covidiot Drivers on signs though... 🤔

In that there London it feels more than a bit lawless at times.
Some are unbelievably polite & gracious almost to European levels of niceness to cyclists.
Others put the C in S****horpe. I’ve had some horrendous close passes the last 2 days - literally within touching distance. I don’t know what’s wrong the “people” who do this. I wager they wouldn’t offer you out for a scrap in the street if they found out you preferred bitter to lager - yet there’ll happily try to run you down JUST because you’ve chosen a different mode of transport.
Honestly, I blame the media for the level of hatred towards cyclists. They’ve spent yrs encouraging & validating negativity towards us. Once I can I can’t wait to move from this dirty, expensive, crowded, busy fun city. 15 yrs here but it’s now time - I’m fed up with worrying for my life every time I hit the roads round here. I just want to ride my bike in peace, quiet & FING SAFETY!

Motorists seems to have become even more impatient than before. I get it - we’re all bored, but hey where are you going in such a hurry when’s there’s nowhere to fing go!?

By all fing means - but thankfully I’ve yet to encounter one on the M3.
Purely anecdotal, but I'm sure that there are more people driving at inappropriate speeds around here of late. There were a couple of lads (presumably) last week who were full-on racing on the road past my house. Mental speed on a small road with poor visibility. Not difficult to imagine them making a cyclist somewhat dead.
Roads still less busy than pre-covid though, which is nice.
It's unbearable. My Garmin Varia radar records the speed of overtaking vehicles and it's consistently 40+ in a 30, and usually well upwards of 70 on NSL b-roads where there's good line of sight.
The police don't give a shit - you only have to look at the Near Miss of the Day on road.cc to realise how useless they are when it comes to actually enforcing the law. I don't think it's the officers themselves (there are now so few I never see them on the roads) but civilian back-office staff who subscribe to the "they don't pay road tax and get in my way" viewpoint who are fobbing off complaints.

had one put the squeeze on me yesterday, me in the bike lane, him in the other lane and both of us heading for the same narrowing gap where the raised kerb starts (I’m ahead of him but he’s rushing the gap with electric assist).
i chickened out and braked, he sailed into the gap then cut the corner across the pedestrian crossing and over the pavement.
had i been on the brompton with 10kg loaded bag on the front i might have stood my ground but i’m not going to pringle a carbon wheel to prove he’s an idiot.
I think we all need to invest in a camera and to proactively send footage of poor to dangerous motorists in to the local police HQ with a note about doing a follow up to seee what if any action they've taken.
Country has taken a fair financial hit recently, and income from fines will be a point that is prevalent at the moment.
Someone posted up one of the cameras the other day(thread somewhere) and its only 70 quid, and even though the pic isnt ultra sharp 4k gopro, theres enough there for the police to get the number plate and issue the appropriate fine or court summons.
£70 isnt much really, considering the price of stuff we fit to our bikes and the cost of them in general. Even 2nd hand low model or older gopros will supply enough clear imagery to initiate some sort of police action. I've seen a number of the hero2 and hero3 going for very cheap in the £30-£40 mark, pennies really.

Just doesn't happen though. If the police were truly cash-strapped they could just switch on the gantry cameras on the M1.
