Whose bored, who isn't? Whats the overriding verdict of "just going for a ride"?

For me this would be used infrequently to get Z2/3 miles in on a weekend where the weather prevents outdoor riding. I'm assuming thats a practical ask as long as I'm not bored to tears...

I did an hour today, just cruising round, picking up a few wheels and doing some sprint intervals.

It was drizzly, cold and horrible outside, I got a decent workout.

I did a 40 minute interval session on it as I didn't have time to go out on the MTB, nor did I want to get cold, wet & plastered in mud.

I don't enjoy road riding anyway, so it's not really a substitute for that.

I only use it for racing/interval stuff really. I don't do any base because it's boring. I get that from my other actual bike rides in the woods.

I used it for 'free' rides when I didn't want intervals or it was too grim outside.

Had a trial membership, think it was about a month long but it wore pretty thin long before that. I've not bothered since, bought some rollers for Z1/Z2 stuff and it's much nicer with some good tunes on.

Better than following a red line on trainerroad...

Not sure how structured sessions would work but just going for a ride there is always someone to catch/race etc.

The races are what make it for me. Nothing quite like a clock ticking or a group just ahead to dig that little bit deeper.

For a steady hour ride on Zwift I tend to join in a group ride, there are normally plenty at weekends. the phone app has all the events listed. Otherwise if f I just go for a ride on there I do tend to get a bit bored. The group ride gives a bit more focus, without the full on effort of a race.

Waterproofed jacket, then spent an hour in garage lubing and putting mud guards on the cx bike ... even a wet ride is better than a pretend ride.

Was contemplating getting Zwift for these wet months - but see too many on strava that went down that road. The bike for me is still about actually getting out on it.

Kryton, have you tried it? Might as well just sign up and do a free trial 🙂

Plan on using it for much the same thing here too. I like the sound of Jason's group ride suggestion. Though do suspect I'll get bored quickly.

even a wet ride is better than a pretend ride.

... and a pretend ride is better than no ride (which is often the alternative here.)

I did sign up & the trial has expired before I used it. Despite the fact I cancelled it they've today charged me £8. I was checking the consensus before arguing with Zwift for my money back.

I feel I'll get bored also. I like the structured Trainerroad seasons, riding Z2 on a computer (even on TR) bores me senseless.

Whats the group rides all about, and how do I find them? Its the weekend where I use it, if I could join a group ride rather then riding around on my own I'd be better tempted.

Would have given it a go but doesn't seem compatible with my iPad, seems like just the thing for days like today when I'm not able to ride outside but don't want the structure of TR

I did 90mins this morning on Zwift, it was chucking down outside and I wanted to do something.

Kryton best way to find group rides is via the app, you go into events and just pick one you fancy doing.
I often join the 4:30 rides/races which are around 45-60mins.

I use it for just going for rides, structured intervals, the odd recovery ride. Handy when it's icy outside, or dark and horrible rain. I didn't use it much/at all in spring/summer/autumn. I can do 2-3 hours on there, with a smart trainer it's more motivating for me than just watching films/TV, a bit of variation in terrain and other people to chase/ride with/keep ahead of.

I'm currently using it for sweetspot and threshold intervals, some tempo stuff. I don't use the workout mode, just control the intervals myself as I would outside.

Level 16 on there now so I've done quite a bit of time, 2200 virtual kms. I've got a virtual Emonda with Zipp 404s now! Virtual Parlee next.

Watts per kg kryton. A is fastest, d slowest. Only counts in races, in social rides it's all about keeping together, helping people who are struggling etc

I can see me dropping it in the spring & summer but I've done 16hrs on it in 6 weeks (which included being ill for 10 days). If I'd been left only with the option of riding outside I'd have lost almost all of that as I've been too busy for anything other than short spells and I hate road riding in dark/wet/(cold) conditions

Quite happy going for a spin up the mountain with no particular plan, invariably get in a tussle with someone so get a workout too.

I've been on Zwift a long time and it's still as compelling if not more so with the race starts now sorted and more courses.

TBH, I don't find a social aspect on Zwift so I prefer bkool currently. I can ride routes I know and if I want to race people I jump into a group ride.

Tried it, didn't really enjoy it. I'll be honest I actually found following a line on TrainerRoad more interesting. Its a nice concept though and if I'd got on board the social side of it I may have taken a different view.

I don't have a garage so my bike is on the turbo in the spare bedroom where my desktop PC is, so I run it off that PC but I've also got an android tablet so I can watch Netflix or You Tube or whatever at the same time, if I'm not racing.
That helps stave off the boredom...in fact, I'll probably do an hour or so later today, catching up on TV whilst I flush out last night's alcohol...
You can also suspend your Zwift membership without losing your workout history. I suspended mine from around April to October and will probably do the same this year.

Just done some of the ZSUN group ride. It's a very good workout. There were 171 riders averaging 23-24mph. I have been off the back before and it's a pig to catch so I tend to find a group just off the front. Ended up a minute in front averaging just over 24mph and my HR was soon a bit closer to threshold than I was hoping for (first decent ride after being ill). So I sat up and waited for the main bunch. Hung with them until 20 miles (it's a 30mile ride) and then called it a night.
With a 21 mile warmup beforehand, then that's a decent block I'd say.
I did catch up on a few YouTube channels whilst I was warming up which I find a little easier than when riding outside 😉

I really couldn't sit there with it running on my iPhone and get the same enjoyment though. For me, it pretty much has to be dark and I run it through the TV. Then my simple little brain is tricked into thinking we're going places which is all I need to be able to crack on and ride.

At the risk of repeating myself, it's less of a 'thing' for prescribing training and more of a 'place' to go and do some.

Love it, have tried using TrainerRoad over past winters but can motivate myself for the pain! Zwift racing hurts too but the fun factor is greater for me. Plus it's so quick & easy to get a decent workout (have it set up in work gym & often do it at lunchtime or after work).

Tend to do a race every 2 or 3 days. Did a recovery ride once which was still quite fun but not regularly using it for that at the moment. Yes a real ride is better but Zwift is very convenient, plus I think I get more out of it training-wise than I would for a real ride which is the main reason I'm using it - I hope to be fitter than ever for real riding by the time spring rolls around! Don't know if I will still keep it up then, wouldn't need to do it but might be addicted to the racing by then!

Got a smart trainer recently which makes it even better although I still enjoyed it a lot before.

Well, Laurens ten Dam obviously couldnt be arsed - his event disappeared.

So I ended up doing the HCZ Training event instead - 5 laps/45k of the hilly Watopia course Basically 1x 5min 9% climb and a couple of short 5% ones with a sprint section in the middle (came 7th).

Bearing in mind I completed an FTP session this morning it was bloody hard going, 215np and 1100 cals during 1h10min at nearly 35kmh.

However, I take back what I said, it becomes very realistic in this scenario, I actually found myself standing on the last hill climb. Definiately worth a weekend ride replacement in this format and a really good workout.

I would get bored just riding around maybe. Although during the day's setup I came across Alex Dowsett & Steve Cummings doing just that.

I'm exhausted!

Excellent news. Its a proper strange thing is zwift. I did the zwift race earlier and it was exceptionally absorbing, so much so that my lad came in to chat and all I was thinking was "f*** off, I'm busy trying to beat this guy"

It cant replace hitting swinley/afan etc, but its a great way to train.

Steve Cummings was doing intervals of 5-6 w/kg up the mountain, at least he was when he just about managed to catch me. 😀

Matt Hayman was on there too.

Dipped my toe in tonight and quite enjoyed it (having got a bit annoyed with TrainerRoad following some recent app updates.)

Knocked up a workout using the creator and did that, then just rode around a bit, spotted a couple of people I knew, more entertaining than I expected. Looking forward to having more of explore when I get a smart turbo.

I've been using Zwift since June 15, in that time it's grown massively, sometimes for the best, sometimes with a few growing pains. The best part of it for me is the racing scene, nothing makes me push harder...I simultaneously hate them because how gut wrenchingly hard they are, but love them for exactly the same reason. They've pushed my FTP from about 240W up to about 300W at present. It has wannabes of course, but on the whole it's a friendly place to be.

Wannabes?

Racing and social aspects are great. I love the fact I can dive into the garage and pedal like a bat out of hell in a race getting a bloody good workout or do a gentle leg spin chatting to whoever is on at the time. All uninterrupted by traffic, traffic lights and Londoners who seem to want to injure me.

It's not a replacement for cycling outside, it's a really good supplement that I have no doubt has not only kept my fitness levels up over winter but has probably improved them too!

I do think you need a smart trainer to get the most out of it though.

Kryton, you still zwifting?

A few sessions in here and despite initial scepticism I like it. Still have my headphones in watching something on Netflix or listening to tunes, but it's nice to just be riding along with a bunch of other people and doing a bit of exploring. Still on a dumb turbo here, can see it being a lot more engaging on a smart one. A much needed bit of mid winter novelty.

Well a few more sessions in and I can't see me going back to Trainer Road now. Pretty much does everything TR does (if you link it to Strava or Training Peaks for analysis) and a whole lot more. There's loads sites sprung up around Zwift too doing all sorts of clever analysis, organising races and group rides.

The GUI is rubbish, and it's ludicrous that i need to still run a Garmin to track stuff like laps, avg lap power, TSS etc. if I'm doing some ad hoc intervals (that really should be built into the mobile link app) but all that aside it's really rather good.

Mentioned on the Zwift thread, was doing a horrid 4x8 today in Zwift that I'd built using their workout creator. Cracked a minute into the last interval. Looked up and spotted that Fox Hill was just up the road with a current KOM of around 7 minutes, dropped out of workout mode and set off for a KOM 🙂 I'd never have managed that extra effort on TR but when you have a big hill with a banner at the top and are passing other riders, it's actually surprisingly motivating!

Been a happy customer of TrainerRoad for years and must have logged close to a thousand hours with them, but unless they come up with something quick to retain their customer base, I can't see how they can compete with Zwift.

I don and can't be bothered to create my own workouts, so until theres a a TR like disciopline focussed library I won't be moving.

Having said that, I'd deferring to a ZCH or similar Zwift Training ride on Sunday for 3hrs, 1hr at Z2, 1hr at Z3 and 1hr 5on 5 off. IF I can get through the duration.

You can upload workout files direct from 'other sources'.
However, some guy from Trainer Road posted on the Zwift Riders FB page and asked people not to 😉 😀

You can upload workout files

^^^ This. Notice that TrainingPeaks now has the capability to export workouts in Zwift format too.

Zwift already provides a pretty big catalogue of workouts too. And the file format they use is fairly open so it won't be long before plans are being published all over the place with downloadable workouts.

Probably explains why TR have been moving into integrating the plans and workouts into the tool and having better tracking of plans as this isn't something Zwift does, but probably won't be long before someone's doing it for Zwift.

I've just gone through the free 25km using a cheap Tacx Blue Matic Smart I bought from Halfords over Crimbo (using my iPhone).

Can't really see much info on the small screen and destroys the battery!

Upstairs spare room is being emptied tomorrow and the laptop/old TV is being used for a Zwift setup 🙂

It's a great way to get some training miles in after work as I don't really do road riding. Just need to see if the bluetooth on the laptop will pair with it.

Any setup tips worth noting? The Turbo I've got had a speed/cadence sensor to attach to the bike and isn't part of the Turbo itself. When I set it up, it just advised to set resistance at 3.

it won't, you'll need to connect to bluetooth devices via the mobile link app.

Ah right! I do have that app, but not used it yet.

Is that what I can see on Crosshair's bike? Really loving it so far, still tweaking the bike for comfort though 🙂

Yes Johnw1984 🙂 I actually normally use the iPhone for the app and the iPad for entertainment (music/vids) but I needed my phone to take the picture 😉

but probably won't be long before someone's doing it for Zwift.

A smart business move for TR would be to cut a license arrangement with Zwift and have TR make the plans available to them on a scalable basis, a condition of which would be to remove the import facility.

It would be good for TR, but a daft move for Zwift. Zwift seem to get the community thing and leaving it open means that anyone can create plans and workouts, which can only be good for Zwift.

Thanks Crosshair!

That's pretty much what I imagine my setup is going to look like tomorrow. I may have to nip out and get a handlebar mount for the phone though.

Going to look into all the different workout modes they've got on there too.

MrBlobby I wasn't suggesting they remove the ability to create workouts. I was suggesting you can't import TR workouts, and if you want to use a TR workout you can - but you select it from within Zwift who have licensed it from TR.

That way, TR get supported financially rather than a a decline in revenues, Zwift gets a comprehensive level of training plans and have outsourced the resource to create & maintain them, and we all get the best of both worlds.

Good grief I should be in sales... 😉

How do people import the TR ones? I didn't think you could export the TR ones, though it'd be pretty trivial to recreate them with the same names.

I don't know..... but I got the impression they were being recreated and shared. One guy said it took him an hour to recreate his entire twelve week plan....
Since TR specifically asked for people not to destroy their business (the gist of the post on FB), discussion has dried up a little...

Tacx Blue Matic Smart

@johnw1984: does it auto-adjust the resistance on the turbo in response to whatever is happening on the zwift course? If not, then presumably it simply has a speed/cadence sensor that comes with the turbo but is in fact no different to an after-market s/c sensor such as Garmin or Wahoo?

For those looking to buy a tablet holder, why not just cut a small rectangle of wood/MDF and clamp it to your bike stand? It also saves having to remove your fancy holder from the bike every time you want to go for a real ride. I used the money I saved for Beer.

Because a bike stand costs more than a fancy tablet holder?
Or because messing around cutting bits of MDF is roughly as enjoyable as scrubbing your eyeballs with a toothbrush?

@doordonot,

Yeah, it's just Tacx Cadence/Speed sensor that's bundled in the box (similar to any aftermarket one).

The actual turbo itself isn't a smart one. It was £1 more for the sensor included over the model down (£99 from Halfords). If I stick with it for training during winter/after work, I might end up investing in a proper one 🙂

Started sorting the spare room out with my setup. Need to buy a fan though soon.

Cheap hobby this....

Well, it was all looking so promising.

I cannot for the life of me get it all connecting together.

Win 10 Laptop (Zwift)
iPhone 6 (Mobile Link)
Tacx Speed/Cadence sensor

I've had it connected briefly for about 5 seconds and can't seem to get Zwift on the laptop to recognise there's a Bluetooth signal. Phone is connected to laptop via btooth.

Would it be far easier to just get an ANT+ USB stick for the Laptop? It's on a range extender via Wifi if that has anything to do with it?

Phone and laptop on same wifi network. Zwift on iPhone dectects it right away, but the Tacx Utility app can't find it?

Just download the full app and run it on your phone? Apple TV or HDMI it to a spare tv?

Ordered! That was really stressing me out 😆

Once it's all set up, I want to try out some more of those training rides. Has anyone found it handy for increasing stamina on days out on a MTB?

Once summer rolls around, I'm going to be getting out in the evenings as there's nowhere really to ride round here. Rivington is a 15-20 minute drive, so that's handy.

@Crosshair, I could do that I suppose. Problem is, it eats my phone battery like nothing I've ever seen! I don't have Apple TV or an HDMI lead to connect to phone either. The ANT dongle and cable was £15, so hopefully that'll sort me out.

Think I've had problems when multiple apps are open. For example, if I've paired the trainer with the Tacx utility app on the iPad, it won't pair with the cycling app or with Zwift until I've closed the utility.

RichPenny, over Bluetooth you can only pair with on device, and one app on that device.

Problem is, it eats my phone battery like nothing I've ever seen!

Could fry and egg on my laptop when it's running Zwift!

I'm so close to getting it all working!

Got home from work with my newly acquired ANT+ dongle. Fired up the laptop, plugged it in, started the mobile link app, started Zwift.

Top left corner, both Bluetooth and ANT+ pinging away. Mobile Link connected straight away (then connected the trainer via Bluetooth). Had a little test and all seemed well.

Just tried it again, back to not recognising Bluetooth, but all devices connect via ANT+ (including a Garmin HR). Mobile Link not connecting again.

I don't understand why the Mobile Link is being so intermittent. When it's connected, it seems like it uses my mobile's Bluetooth to connect the devices. I'm using a Wifi range extender upstairs where the setup is, could this be causing issues?

Been installed for a while and seemed to be running fine with everything else. Anyone else had similar issues with the Mobile Link app? Think this may be an Apple/Microsoft thing, or not?

You don't need to use the mobile link app if you've got ant+

I know, but it's nice to have the HUD on my bike 🙁

I can ring a bell and everything when it works!

Yeah, I use it for turns & power ups etc as it's easier to reach. Maybe if you've paired sensors it's getting confused? Unpair the trainer and turn off the BLE part of mobile link?

Sure I read somewhere that some trainers shut down their bluetooth if ANT+ connects - try pairing the BT first, then plug in the ANT lead to your PC ??

I'll try those, cheers for the suggestions. From what I read, Mobile Link is supposed to connect to the Zwift computer over the WiFi, but it's not even doing that.

I'll give the suggestions a go though.

Zwift already provides a pretty big catalogue of workouts too. And the file format they use is fairly open so it won't be long before plans are being published all over the place with downloadable workouts.

Noticed this the other day...

Does anyone know how to input the zwift ftp 12 week plan into a diary/calendar without manually entering every stage?

Going back to the OP, and comparing Zwift to TR. Did some intervals on Zwift last night (just doing the intervals on the Garmin rather than a pre programmed workout.) Selected a flat loop. Having a loop to ride with other riders to catch and corners and features that I can tick off and a point on the course to reach definitely helps with motivation to put the effort in. Much more so than a number and a wiggly line on TR. I like it.

Im in slight agreement. Doing a couple if the rides where you get familiar with the sprint, climbs, kom's etc allows you to "set" yourself at the foot of a climb and treat it like an interval, likewise hanging on to someone else etc.

Yesterday and currently for me is MTB race Sims eg Richardson which are 15 on 15 off and in think the TR format works better for me in that regard. Saturday is 3 x 20 mins and it looks to be icy outside negating outdoor miles so i may do that on Zwift.

I had my first Zwift session yesterday - quite enjoyed it, but a couple of questions if anyone can help.

I'm getting quite a bit of lag when I slow down or speed up - is that normal or is my PC being too slow?

How do I go back into it today and see any stats from yesterdays ride?

I got several messages yesterday saying I'd 'unlocked' things, one referred to kit - what's that all about?

Thanks for the help,
Phil
