possible? I'm sure i've seen a post on here suggesting it was possible but can't find it now.

I've got that setup on one bike. I used the cage kit (I don't think it'll work without one).

I use 11-40 with that mech and standard cage. It's really pushing it to be honest. The chain is a bit slack in the smallest cog. I think I only get away with it because of the chain guide. The one up 'rad' cage is the 'proper' solution I think if you have the cash.

Well, it appears to work. And better than the XT medium cage mech that I trashed last night.
