Need a bit of help here... Anyone have any opinions on trip locations? Am trying to find somewhere that suits both trail runners and mountain bikers, and have so far come up with Coed y Brenin and Settle (Settle because of proximity to the Pennine Way/Malham Cove as well as - I understand - some great mtb trails and a couple of small trail centres).
However I am a clueless Londoner so am looking for enlightenment. Would you go to either of these places? I'm looking for a location which would be pretty good for a mix of abilities for the mtb side of things, although probs heading more towards intermediate/good. And if anyone has any thoughts on the running side too then that'd be great.
Or is there somewhere else that I just haven't thought of? Please help... Ta.
Cumbria!
Cumbria!
It's shut. Go to Yorky-shore
(Rich - shut the hell up man, they'll all want to come)
Being a southerner he's obviously after like-minded miserable folk hence the request about Wales & Yorkshire. If he wanted cheering up then he'd just head straight to the Lakes and wouldn't be asking the question. ๐
OP, when you say "trail runners", is that what you meant or do you mean "fell runners"?
If you do mean "trail runners" then the Yorkshire Dales is likely to be your better option.
Dartmoor
If you're travelling that far, why wouldn't you just go straight to the Lakes?
I come from Cumbria originally so I know its great, but frankly the amount of tourists there usually annoys the hell out of me... Plus I want to go somewhere a bit different.
Miserable company isn't a necessity - in fact would be good to maybe go somewhere a bit more cheerful since EVERYONE in London is grumpy as hell ๐
Also - more trail running than fell running. London has made me soft.
Settle is pretty poor for running, compared to the Peak district.
Even the 3 peaks are pretty boring in terms of trails.
and Settle has very little in terms of descent mtb trails.
It has some good roads for motorbikes and road cycles.
how about Hope?
or head up to the lakes, only 40 minutes further.
Coed y Brenin would be betterer though.
Calderdale then?
Possibly the most densely packed and varied MTB riding in a single valley, anywhere in the UK.
I don't find settle poor for running. Got an active fell running club for starters (three club runs a week and racing most weekends). True, most of the club runs don't start from settle itself but some do!
But I could understand people preferring the lakes for a trip.
I live and ride around there, but I wouldn't necessarily plump for Settle for a trip. I don't think the Settle Loop MTB trail offers that much of interest, particularly in the 'normal' anticlockwise direction. Settle itself is OK, but nothing special for eating out etc.
Personally I'd go the whole hog and stay in Swaledale if Yorkshire is a must - there's enough there to satisfy the more experienced bikers.
TBH distance from London isn't really a factor so don't let that hold back any suggestions.

Also, just to throw something else in the mix - would love somewhere we can go kayaking too..................

I think Wales is starting to win in that case.

oops, edit, misread the post - CyB has a runners shop (with a case full of hire/test shoes which look well used). Haven't ever been trail running there myself, but I presume there is a decent network of running trails in the woods for that to work.
Depending on just how soft you are, then there's plenty of brilliant FP options through the surrounding hills of varying severity - I've run quite a few of those and some superb stuff.
I think cyb is excellent and I go every year, I'm not a trail centre expert by any means but the riding is a great change from the south east.
Errm, Kayakers? Wales? ๐ฏ
Actually I haven't heard of any serious access incidents for some years now but definitely worth asking on a canoeing forum for up to date advice.
@aracer I wouldn't class the Rhinogau as "trail" territory ๐ Some of the roughest ground I've been on.
Other than the kayacking, as Martinhutch says, Swaledale is probably a good bet.

Which is why I edited my post (though if that's the roughest you've been on you've led a sheltered life). A wide variety of different stuff in that area - when I went up the Rhinogs I ran on the trails through the woods just to the East of the Rhinogs. Now I think of it, I have also "trail run" in CyB itself as part of events there.
Kayaking in North Wales is fine - aggro is largely historic - it's at least no worse than anywhere else in E&W.
I've run on some pretty rough ground - Danny McAskill turned round from some of it ๐
Top kayaking in Bala/Tryweryn, stones throw from cyb
Coed y Bernini has a good network of trail runs not to mention the obvious mob trails.
You can also run down the mawddach trail which is not far away or around trawsfynydd lake.
Llanberis also offers kayaking on the lake and you can run up snow don't.
Swaledale.
Stay at Dales Bike Centre, runners should pop up to Swaledale Outdoors for info on suitable routes (or look at a map).
Swaledale is perfect for the trail running/MTB combo

as an example.
Easy access from A1, Stay at the Dales Bike Centre. Also SwaleOutdoors for running.
As for kayaking, look up the vids on Youtube... ๐
Cheers
Paul
I'd go Peaks, not that I know much about trail running but it looks like it'd be good for it.
And the MTBing is certainly good enough.
I've been to Settle and north Snowdonia (cyb). Never felt the need to go back to Settle. We go back to north snowdonia about twice a year. There's loads of mountain biking, not just CYB. It has a great variety of terrain and technical levels. From the double black at Antur Stiniog to a nice bimble through Beddgelert forest. I would recommend a day out riding Snowden as well.

Awesome!
Contact Calder Valley Fell Runners if you fancy a run out with them. Otherwise, get an OL12 map and knock yourself out.
echo Hebdencyclist's post calderdale is flipping awesome for trail running!
