So fancy a couple of days riding in the Lakes, Perhaps Whiteless pike on the first day then beer and food and Helvellyn the day after, has anyone stayed in the YMA hostels and are they bike safe and seem cheap enough, or is it B+B time
In the last couple of years I've stayed at Hawkshead and Keswick YHAs. Both very good and have bike storage. YHAs have bars these days too ๐
Yhas are superb all over.
I've stayed in Troutbeck near Windermere. Bike shed has a steel hoop set in concrete to lock bikes too. Accommodation great too.
As above, all good. Grasmere was good for bikes last year - nice big locked shed, great staff. Red squirrels and deer in the garden as well...........
YHA is great ,needs to go back to the days of doing a job to keep the price down as time you add breakfast a B and B can work out as cheap especially for a couple

Yep, YHAs are very nice these days but they do sit in a strange place price-wise. I guess the advantage over a B&B is the self catering bit, but they're not cheap enough that it's a no brainer.
I think the days of chores are long gone though!
me and my family are staying in 2 lake district YHAs this weekend, well one ex yha as the one on derwen****er is now derwen****er independent hostel and is almost on the shores of the lake. A lot of the YHAs in the lakes are in stunning locations, ambleside for eg is literally on the lake, windermere has superb views and just take a look at buttermere. You do not often get locations like that in a B&B. Don;t forget to take a look the derwen****er independent hostel, it has the great ruddy waterfall behind and is literally on the borrowdale bash route, if you have a canoe as well you couldn't ask for a better location.
but they do sit in a strange place price-wise
Agree, slightly. They sit at a strange price point if you want a private room, during high season. If you are prepared to slum it in a dorm, with snoring and farting abounds, they are still very good value.
YHA Borrowdale is great, just stayed there the 3 times this year... ๐
I now want to get back up the lakes for a few days riding.
Stop posting threads that mean spending more money
Cheers for the heads up guys , the main thing for me is security for the bikes I'm happy to slum it so it looks like I'm to a winner
Borrowdale have a lock up round the back, but tbh I always just leave the bikes in the car overnight.
