I have an older style xtr rear hub that is in desperate need of a service, how easy / difficult is this to do? Any links to some instructons or is it a LBS job?

I'm not certain about XTR but I know this about XT.

1) If your freehub's the problem, it's not servicable and you need to be able to service the rest of the hub to replace the freehub.

2) If you have the right cone spanners (I think 13mm & 17mm, and you probably need 2 of the 13mms) they're very easy to service. If you dismantle it in the kitchen it saves time. You then need a long 10mm allen key to unscrew the freehub.

The reason for doing it in the kitchen is that you will drop and lose 2 of the bearings. All you need to do is look under the fridge because that's where they are.

Here's a good link to the Park Tools site http://www.parktool.com/repair/byregion.asp?catid=57&imageField2.x=15&imageField2.y=6
