Ive been running single on my 29r for a while with a FSA crank am i right in thinking the XTR M970 has different spacing. If so any advice on a replacment ring would be great. I'm looking to run 34 or 35t.

Nope, you can run what you want. If you change the granny you need some 2mm spacers, but BCD is standard 64/104.

Spacing doesn't matter if its a Single ring. The BCD is 104 like most other 4 bolt cranks.
