Hi i recently bought a bnib xtr 10 speed rear shifter because i am running a 36t single ring up front i was going to change to 10 speed but i have been offered a saint rear mech at a bargain price so i am going to stick with 9 speed can i use the 10 speed shifter still and not shift all way or is the ratio out? If so is the xtr shifter the only shimano mtb shifter without an indicator telling what gear you are in (i hate them they look cheap in my opinion)???

on xt, the window is removable (2 screws)... I think the new slx and deore have removable windows too.

You can't use the 10spd shifter in a 9spd setup, the pull ratio is all wrong.

You need to use a 9spd shifter funnily enough!

As far as gear indicator windows are concerned, they're removable on XT and SLX (possibly Deore too?) so no issues there.

No, you cannot use the 10 speed shifter with a 9 speed rear mech.

10 Speed XTR shifter will not work with 9 speed mechs. Pull ratios are different.

Edit: beaten to it.

All the literature tells you that 9speed (i.e. Saint) will not work with the new 10speed stuff.
