I'm thinking of putting some brand new XT v-brakes on my GT Avalanche with a rigid steel fork. A few years ago they had a reputation for being squealers - front in particular. Does anyone know if things have improved with them?

I'm not aware of any such reputation.

The parallel push ones are. Is that the sort you propose to use?

I have modern ones on my 97 Cindercone and they are excellent. No squeal, M770 I think or something similar.

I remember lusting after XT vees, when my STX-RCs had me into parts of the landscape I wasn't intending to ride.
..............If I were building retro or pub bike they'd go on though.

This was my source of the "squealing" reviews http://www.mtbr.com/cat/brakes/brake-system/shimano/xt-v-brake/prd_350747_108crx.aspx

It might have been the old parallelogram action ones that were squeaking. Thanks for comments - it appears that Mr S might have solved the annoying problem now. I'll be buying modern ones like thorpie uses ๐Ÿ™‚

My '99 XT Vs squealed, well the front one did. Cured it by fitting XTR

Yes, back in about 95' they did. I just found the remnants of the 'upgrade' Shimano sold at the time to resolve the issue. Essentially they were very thin almost paper like round stickers that you stuck on to pad out the sloppyness in the parallelograms. Worked a treat, though cost a lot comparatively speaking for what they were.

Its been about 5 years since I had XT V's. From what I remembered the pads that came stock did squeal abit, though mostly in damp/wet conditions, was fine in the dry. I replaced the pads with more expensive cartridge type ones and also ensure you set the pads to toe in.

I run the old parralel push XTs on my Bonty, they don't squeal for me, but I do have ceramic rims.

IIRC M760 XTs were the last parallel push v brakes shimano did and they were good. No slop, no squeeling.

Got myself a pair of the 2012 M780's. Christened 'em today at Llandegla and they were SQUEAK-FREE. Result! Thanks everyone.
