There's no point in paying extra for XTs. Just get some M530s. Oh, and they're ace.

if the XTs are thinner I would get them next time. Have the M530s and I prefer them to my 540s. Much more reassuring to use with my shimano shoes (they contact them just right).

XTRs are definitely thinner but expensive and seem to fall apart 🙁

In my opinion enough weight to make a difference. Ribble had the xt version for 48 quid.

Scapegoat - if weight's the issue (and not cost) then shouldn't oldfart go for XTR?

Personally - as getonyourbike says.

No,xt look nicer, and were only 47 quid. I like the way they look. I picked up a pair of 530 in a shop and was shocked at how heavy they felt. I can afford xt so I bought them. Must I feel guilty now?:D

+1 I used to use 647s too, now on XTs. Not quite as good on the trail but much lighter so, overall, an improvement.

Specialy when you saw the front and back bit of the cage off that does nothing but add weight.

I have had all 3 versions of the trail SPD's. Xtr definately thinner and lighter, but broke. Xt and the 530's look the same, but XT lighter with better axle.

I use these, bought them from On-One for not a lot a couple of months ago. They're superb, they've plenty of support and I'm much happier with these than the Candys I had before.

V.impressed.

Mrs O is. She loves them - they were the pedal that finally got her to clip in properly, plenty of confidence for her.

They're great! And like all Shimano SPD's will possibly last for ever

I picked up a pair of 530 in a shop and was shocked at how heavy they felt.

They're only fifty grams heavier than the 530s apparently. I've been wanting some SPDs with a bit more of a platform for a while and these look quite good. Dunno whether it's worth an extra £20 for 50 grams lighter though.

OK, what's the deal here - fake? Claims you can get the XTs for £22 from Malaysia. Seller has good feedback.....

The weight they state is quite a bit more than I've seen elsewhere though.

Do the XT Trails give good support as i need the platform

No more support than any other SPD pedal tbh

Even with moderately stiff SPD shoes there's no contact between the cage and the sole of the shoe.

The cage simply makes them easier to flip over when clipping in

They look cool though and suit some bikes more than minimalist SPDs.

What about for those moment where you're trying to get going again and don't quite manage to clip in straight away? Or if you come unclipped by mistake? Any advantage to the platform then?

Not really.

The cage is more of a cosmetic rail around the outside than any fundamental change to the platform of the pedal. They have to work with all SPD shoes and comparing them side-by-side with conventional SPDs you can see that the shoe is in contact with the mechanism before it touches the platform.

Grim, I find I can pedal away even if I don't engage. Also, if riding into the village with flat shoes, the trail spd's are fine.

When clipped in there is no extra support.

I use a fairly soft pair of Pearl Izumi shoes, maybe it's different with stiff racing types.

They are nice, but my XTR pedals have successfully challenged my preconception that Shimano pedals last forever. XTs do seem a bit more robust though.

On the support thing. I have one set of shimano shoes where the cage on the trails does offer more support as if they are made to work together. Does not happen with my other shimano shoes.

The shoes are M162s and you can feel the support when clipping in as you compress the sole against the cage.

Use the CRC GBP10 code, and you can get a tenner off these (well, buy a sticker or something to take the total over £50!)

I bought a pair of these for my Canyon Nerve and I really like them. The feel more supportive than my XTRs which hadno cage and they also make my bike look a bit more 'trailsey' which I like. I also bought a pair for my wife as they will also be going on her road bike and they look better.
