Or does it make any difference? Thanks EV
how many rings at the front? if only 2, then go for medium cage - if 3, then go long cage
3, OK long it is then!
Thanks Mr.C
no probs!
Been running short cage on my 5 for 2 years with 3 rings up front and no probs
The short cage shadow is nearly as long as the long cage non-shadow if that makes any sense. I use the short cage with a 3 ring and 11-32 setup and it's fine.
short cage not much shorter, bit stronger, bit more out of the way, should be a bit quicker/sharper (but never noticed this), short will be OK and if you dont use big to big and small to small cogs -best not to as just too much chain line twist- go for a short. or what ever is the cheapest!
Medium shadow is disappointingly long, much longer than a medium non-shadow. Why? Otherwise it's ace and I reckon easily long enough for a 3 ring setup. Look at a picture of a bike with the long cage on it, it nearly touches the ground FFS!
Not XT but I use an X9 medium cage with three rings with no issues...
I run XTR meduim, XT medium on all 3 ring setups.. granted I'm running a 42T cassette.
Fitted a medium XT Shadow to my Five llast week (3 ring front) no issues at all.
make sure that the XT shadow is the newer design without the tab or you'll wreck it. See the differences on my website. I ground mine against the cassette because the tab rides too close to the top sprocket on the cassette.
