The one that got mullered was a long so i wanted to replace it with a medium to give a bit more ground clearance as it for my missus 14" orange five.

Isn't the 35 tooth thing the difference between the biggest and shortest chain combos, rather than the size of the biggest cog on the back?

Yes it will work on a single ring setup.

As above - capacity is the difference not the max.

Ok, I'll jump in ...

It's the difference 'twixt the biggest and smallest chainring on the front added to the difference 'twixt biggest and smallest cog on the back.

In your example 0 (as it's a single ring on the front) + 25 (from 36-11) = 25. So the mid-cage will be fine. ... but don't forget to just double check the chain length afterwards. ๐Ÿ˜‰
