[#2186161]

Apparently its a well known fault, freehub body on an M775 wheelset has given up the ghost. I can get a replacement body for £37 or the whole hub with bearings etc for £43.

But the strange thing is it failed with absolutely no warning, near the bottom of a descent. And instead of seizing up and turning into a fixie, its lost drive and just spins both ways, still nice and smooth, just no drive. Is there any hope of reviving it?!

£43 is a bit of a downer, we were mid-holiday so bought a temporary replacement back wheel, rotor bolts and Schreader tube for £50, should've just bought a decent wheel and been done with it. Even with a new freehub I'll still have to buy a 14mm hex socket, and even Halfords don't have them...

There is a tool to flush cleaner through and then drive some new oil in.
A squirt of wd40 may give you a few more months..

Try the Classifieds...when I was after one, someone sent me one free (Thanks Matt!). 😀

I though the tool was no longer available for the grease? DO you actually need a 14mm socket or cone spanners?

And finally, check to see if the freehub is available on a different hub. Sometimes you can buy a cheaper complete lower end hub with the same freehub. You can get the part numbers off Shimano.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately the freehub is unique to the m770 and m775 hubs. It needs a 14mm allen key/hex bit (sorry, not socket) to remove the freehub.

Might try flushing it with WD40/plus gas once my ebay hex bit arrives.

14mm allen (to remove freehub), 2 x 5mm allen key and a 17mm cone spanner to service my m775 rear hub. Just did it...packed it full of RnR Red Devil grease. Works lovely now.

Nuke...you saying you managed to strip and service the freehub or just the bearings? I had a quick look and got the impression the freehub was non-serviceable.

Hi guys,

My M775 rear hub tightened up, crushing the freehub mechanism, ripping the tread which the freehub bolt goes into and even damaging my rotor and rear caliper.

Can you actually buy the M775 straight pull hub? If so from where?

I would try pealing the seal off and soaking in lube/degreaser, drying it out then try and inject lube in it (syringe and needle) - that's what I did with mine 🙂

What lube/grease do folk have success with for freehub innards?

Not sure if its scientific but I use Weldtite TF2 grease - the red stuff:

Description
- High quality red grease from Weldtite.
- With Teflon surface protector for added smoothness.
- Excellent lubricating properties and water resistant.
- Great for use in headsets, hub bearings and assembling threaded components.

Thanks, but the problem is I cannot attached a freehub to the hub body as the thread for the freehub bolt is damaged and the bearing on the the rotor side ground into the hub body. It's totalled, need a new hub, but cannot find one anywhere.

I'd be buying a different hub...or just a new wheel!

I managed this too, I had assumed that I'd overtightened it after servicing, soon after I did a rocky downhill and ping, hub stripped=fubared wheel. As I already had 2 spare freehubs and a whole wheels worth of spare spokes (and they were cheap) I got another one. Looking like a bad choice now.
Had you recently serviced yours AMT27?

Hmm I'm thinking a bit of threadlock and less torque next time i service my hub.

I have had to replace 2 free hubs now in 18 months which i got from Merlins as they were the cheapest i could find at £39.00 which really pissed me off. And just this week the rear hub is starting to knock and and sounds like the hub body is about to break down , again. Thing is i like the wheels other than the hub body and cant afford to get any more, but at £40.00 each time the free hub breaks its getting silly.
