[#1083781]

just looking to replace all three rings on my XT chainset, only done chain reaction so far but looks like i can get a whole chainset for £5 less than the rings!!!
£109 on a ring set is madness i thought £75 for my previous xt set was bad

what is this madness
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/SearchResults.aspx?Search=m770

anyone know a different brand which actually matches up ok with the new XT chainset then?

Do you really need the outer changed? That would save £76.
Don't Middleburn Middleburn, Race Face etc fit?
They're better anyway.

im sure i could get some that would but it seams a bit crud. i mean firstly its gonna look like crap (yes im vain about it) and secondly whats the point of a fancy compoiste middle ring if you replace it with a big lump of alu instead!

Yep, as much as I'm tempted by an XT crankset (at only £125 at CRC), if it were me I'd be buying a 36T SLX middle and a bashring.

Pushing £90rrp for a chainring is taking the p##s and definitely will prejudice me against buying Shimano in the future.

I've got the M760 XT (i think) and run steel Deore inner & middle rings on it. £23 from CRC for the pair, minimal weight penalty (66grms) and last 3/4 times longer.
Also just put an SLX outer ring on it, looks a bit ugly but someone on here sold it me for £15.

£65 for an XT outer ring is beyond a joke. I wouldn't pay that even if i had a bloody job!

Ah, the recession, making fat punters everywhere realise that they're not even good enough to justify XT.

It is quite off saying that about XT rather than XTR.

Also, I hear middleburn rings don't work on newer shimano stuff as shimano have made it really hard to copy them.

Classic Japanese capitalism model. Sell things cheap at little or no profit, sell the spares at an inflated price to make the profits.

It works best if you use your own standards so that after market manufacturers cannot make spares or if you change designs frequently its not worth aftermarket manufacturers making spares

Same reason inkjet printer manufacturers sell you cheap printers and then skin you on cartridges?

What's the difference between the SLX and XT middle ring? They look the same, are both steel and plastic according to CRC. Anyone have both to hand to compare?

No one with any sense buys shimano chainrings over deore. Just get middleburn or similar which work near enough just as well for shifting but last longer and are reasonably priced.

I got a Race Face middle for £22 earlier in the year, light than the original XT version and has lasted much longer.

+1- you'd have to be demented to run XT rings once the originals have gone unless money is no object.

Why is it that the outer is so much more than the middle and inner?

Merlin are doing a pair of CNC rings for £33 - inner and middle only. They used to do a 3 ring set for £45 but for some reason they don't do the big ring anymore. I've got these on 2 bikes and they're excellent - good looking and hard wearing. Worth a pop if you can eke a bit more life out of your XT big ring.

How long have y'all got out of your XT rings? Got my remedy July 08 but still apparently going strong.

The latest steel/plastic XT and SLX middle rings, they look identical, last for ages ime and more significantly seem much more resistant to chain-suck than previous XT middles - they seem to have redesigned the tooth profile. In fact, weirdly, they look almost as if they're worn from new, kind of more pointy and curved in the tooth than you'd expect. Are you sure that the middle is really worn out? My first SLX middle ring survived almost a year in the Peak including a full winter with a lot of riding.

They also, in my experience anyway, last a lot longer than the stamped Deore steel middle rings which I've used a lot in the past.

You'd be pissed off if the new tyres for your Porsche cost more than the car did to start with

The paraphrase someone I heard on R4 comedy regarding Waitrose and Sainsburys':

Question - "What is the point of XT?"
Answer - "To keep the rif-raf from XTR"

Middleburn is the answer, 2 years so far from mine - although XTR for me 😉
