[#2003503]

Fancy spending some money on some new forks. Currently have Decathlon XCMs which i think may be rebranded Suntour XCRs (can anyone confirm ?) what kind of forks are the next level up?

Rockshox Recons are probably the next step-up. Depends on what your looking to spend - best place for a decent pair at a good price is the classifieds here!

Not sure what to spend really, just sounding out the market. Are Toras not worth the trouble?

I'm sure I saw somewhere selling toras for under 8o notes a while ago, cant find it now tho.
Ive got em on my bike and I like em, id like a set of fox costing five times as much, but i dont think they would be five times better.

Merlin havs toras and recons for £130

i would happily say so yes

the tora is a servicable item with spares back up

its got real hydralic damping and certain models have the hydraulic lock out .... the XCRs are prone to locking out in the wet - water swellable seals and dont have much inside them - spares are non existant

Id personally say that you'd see almost no real diffeence with Toras - if your at a stage where you think an upgrade is worth it, you need to go for a "medium range fork" to see the difference in performance and make the cost effective. For £150 or less you can get some decent kit - i've seen 2008ish Fox Floats going for that.

You do need to consider that the more expensive and better the forks are, the more maintanance they are likely to need & the more it will cost - although its fairly simple to do most thing DIY if your not ham fisted/gun-ho.

a bit confused by this. Don't the Toras fit into the "medium range fork" and under £150 category?

From personal experience on holiday with a hire bike (HT Scott) they were on their way out in 5 days of riding in the Austrian Alps - just XC mind you 🙁 I wouldn't touch em with a barge pole!

I have some unused Tora 302's if you are interested in a pair.

I've just picked up some 2010 Tora SL solo airs with poplock bar mounted lock out - something I really like on my HT's - and after the first ride, 2hrs of muddy rooty single track on my SS and to be honest for the money they're great, dead easy to set up, damping felt nice and pretty damn stiff too.

Not quite as nice as my Reva Races, but plenty cheaper and ideal for the bike they're on too

I can understand confusion. Personally though I would go for Recons. While the pros given for the Toras over the XCRs is true, you will probably find Recons "cheap" enough and you would be moving up a rung as it were. Depends if you just want to keep close to where you are or go up a little bit when you spend the money. A quick Google of both models show a fair overlap of prices on both models.

Personally I would spend more money and get a better fork, but thats me, not you! Main problem with the Tora's is that they are quite heavy

2009? tora 302's. (have lockout and Uturn) Have been fitted but unridden (warranty replacement, but I bought another set in the meantime) ??£80 posted?. email is in profile. I can find some pics if you like.

Z.

I had XCRs, surprisingly good forks while they lasted but the seals are poor and the bushings are plastic, so as soon as mud gets in they start to die. Soon they get sloppy and jerky. They need constant preventative medicine, once they go off they're dead as the parts are unrealistic to buy. Replaced those with Tora 302s which were better in every way, stiffer, more reliable, and more controlled. Replaced those with Revelations which were better again, still using those.

Tora 318 is a great fork if you can find one at a good price, same chassis but motion control damping, well worth it.
