Hi all
I'm getting some wheels built for my disc equipped CX bike. It's currently fitted with XTR (M960) centre lock hubs with Mavic Open Pro CD rims. There is nothing wrong with these wheels other than the anodising has been worn through (by the previous owner) on the braking surface I have some CXP14 rims that have been anodised black and I want to use these on this bike as I am running BB7 cable discs and don't need to worry about the braking surface
So here's my dilemma, do I use the XTR hubs with the black rims or do I leave these wheels as is and get some new hubs to go with the black deep section rims.
What lightweight XC hubs (other than the usual Hope & Christ King hubs) would you recommend?
They have to be 32 hole
They have to be black or white
They have to be disc hubs (would prefer centre lock but 6 bolt would be ok too)
The rear must be 135mm spacing
Thanks for any assistance
Cheers
Ken
other than chris king? computer says noooo, buy mr king
XT
any decent MTB hub...
Tune
DT240s
CK
Hope Evo2
then there's a whole load of randoms: PMP, Extralite...
Money any object?
My vote is keep your current wheels built up as spares. Buy some xt 775 centre lock from Rose bikes or actionsports.de.... I have some for my xc race wheels, they're great. With dt revs & stand Olympic they build a 1500g wheelset.
Or for lighter weight, a2z lightweight 6 bolt disc hubs.
Or hope.
A2Z. Lighter than anything mentioned, and cheaper than all but XT.
njee - as reliable? Spares support?
OP - a hub is a hub is a hub - you don't need anything different for cx as mtb as touring etc. - you won't find anything new just be asking the Q about cx.
Anyway...you are replacing perfectly servicable wheels because the anodising is worn through?

Spares available from any Windwave dealer (ie most shops), easier than many brands.
It's cross, so it's not going to be subjected to quite such harsh conditions as an MTB, although mine are still absolutely perfect after a whole season. Original grease still clean in both hubs. I'll take that.

Yes I am coz it looks rubbish 🙄
I'd like Chub hubs but I don't think they do a rear that isn't single speed
I've got some 29er Hope Hoops for my disc equippted CX bike - happy with the Hope Pro2 Evo hubs so far.

I'd say more - you see how often those clowns pressure wash their bikes? Every lap FFS!
And I am guessing Mr Shield's bikes get cleaned more than ridden 😉
Doesn't tend to be gritty mud though - just field type stuff with grass and what not.
I'd definitely use them.
it's the water that gets past the seals, not the mud!
Thank you for that. 🙄
My point is that if you're riding in claggy mud that washes off pretty quickly (even if with a pressure washer) it's not the same exposure as a 4 hour ride through gritty mud.
I sense these won't be getting pressure washed every 10 minutes though.
You should try some of the hubs, as you seem to pop up to descredit them every time I mention them! Found out today that they should be convertible to 15mm using the AM Classic axle, as the bearings and shell widths are identical, so they're even more versatile!

They don't get cleaned very often but they do need to be aesthetically pleasing as well as functional
I don't care about them being dirty but they need to be nice under the dirt

I've got some black hopes on deep section carbon rims - come fitted with tufo cross tubs that you can have for £300
Flange
Nice bike with nice wheels ............thanks but no thanks
Are they eBay Gigantex rims?
Dunno chap, I got them from Paul78 off of here. Seem stiff and light though, from the little riding I've done on them!
look at that fence.
NJee I'm not sure I've ever discredited them...but I do not favour any hub without proven spares availability, having advised many owners their fancy or cheap hubs are fit only for the bin.
How heavy are they and the road hubs?
If you want cheap and mega reliable, search for "Magura comp hubs" on eBay.
They're rebadged DT Onyx, most reliable hubs I've ever owned. They're not the lightest (though lighter than XT of course), but they go on and on... And for £40 a pair on eBay! Still a ridiculous bargain, even if I did get mine when he was selling them for £25 a pair...
Al, again, theyre distributed by Windwave, who keep spares, so they're easier to come by than Tune, King, PMP, Extralite etc!
They don't do road hubs. Disc hubs are 360g per pair.
As an aside, I got my Hope Hoops out yesterday and the bearings have gone gritty. They're the same age as the A2Zs, with about 1/2 the use and no jet washing. Even more encouraged to build a second pair of A2Zs now!
