Hello

I'm having trouble with my right X0 shifter - the shifter has got progressively stiffer (oo er) and tonight it sometimes wouldn't change at all or changed 2 at once - the lever felt very strange

Its not the cables as I replaced them a couple of rides ago - are they foooked ?

cheers

If you replaced the cables a couple of weeks ago around the time the problems started most likely its something that happened then Snags in the end of the outer cable?

Full of cack? Can they be taken apart, cleaned and regreased? I did with some Shimano LX shifters that had similar problems.

I had the exact same problem recently. Disassembled the unit very carefully noting where everything located and found that it was the pawl that engages on the teeth was not finished off very well. Carefully reshaped it with a Dremel and it's working fine now. Be warned though, it's very fiddly to get back together and took a few attempts to get right.
Bit shite for something that costs so much.
Edit to add; it took me ages to figure out what was causing it and I went through everything that's been suggested already.

So this 'progression' has happened really quickly?

Hmm. Here's what I'd do. Unbolt the cable from the derallieur, and push the cable back so it's poking out of the shifter a bit. (not entirely sure how this works with SRAM but suspect you'll need to be in 9th) Push and pull the cable through each bit of the outer, should be run easily in both directions, if not, like TJ said. Check the derallieur moves freely up and down the casette range whilst still free of the cable. Shouldn't be gritty or notchy. If both of these are OK, then be prepare for the boingy bits. Might be somthing dislodged or a bit broken/snarling up inside the shifter.

My x0 shifters are dead easy to take apart, a shot of gt85 inside should do the trick. Though I'd have thought you've probably got a kink in the cable somewhere.
