Why are seatposts measured by their total length as against their usable length (ie rail to max height line) - so if I want a post to give 210mm visible post it seems the 280mm post I ordered only has 200mm useable length. Stupid way of measuring posts IMO.

Because the "Min Insertion Line" is only a guide anyway. The seatpost should always be inserted so that it ends below the bottom of the top tube.

The OP still has a point 'cos he could measure from the bottom of the top tube before he orders the seat post pretty easily.
